3. Las raíces simples y compuestas
Otra distinción útil en la gramática Quichua es entra una raíz
simple y una raíz compuesta. Como hemos visto, la raíz simple es la
parte simple e irreducible de una palabra. La combinación de tal raíz
simple más algún sufijo se llama una raíz compuesta, siempre y cuando
tal combinación puede recibir sufijos adicionales.
3. Roots versus Stems
Another useful distinction in Quichua grammar is that between
a root and a stem. As we have seen, the root is the bare, basic and
irreducible part of a word. The combination of such a root plus any
suffix is called a stem, provided this combination is still open to further
suffixation.
la raíz simple verbal + el sufijo nominalizador → la raíz compuesta nominal “comprar”
randi- + -na → randina
the verb root + the nominalizing suffix → the noun stem “buy”
la raíz compuesta nominal + la posposición adverbial → el adverbio “a comprar”
randi-na + -man → randinaman
the noun stem + the adverbial postposition → the adverb “to buy”
la raíz simple verbal “ir” + el sufijo verbal → la raíz compuesta verbal “estar yendo”
ri- + -cu → ricuthe
verb root “go” + the verb suffix → the verb stem “be going”
la raíz compuesta verbal “estar yendo” + el sufijo verbal → la raíz compuesta verbal “estoy yendo”
ri-cu- + -ni → ricuni
the verb stem “be going” + the verb suffix → the verb “I am going”
