Smilja brilliantly defined the Adlib style as, “Dress as you please,
but with style”. A maxim that still stands today, despite the
dictatorship of ubiquitous and vulgar denim and the ugliness
of grunge. Ibiza, despite the flocks of clubbers, has always
been a stylish island. The islands female politicians could set
an example by wearing Adlib more often. Imagine that, instead
of putting on vulgar jeans or serious tailored suits, hand made
by some woman-hating couturier, they were to wear diaphanous
costumes that turned them into capricious goddesses, vestal
virgins or priestesses about to tear out our palpitating hearts.
They’d win any treaty for the Pitiusan Islands!
Smilja’s fashion show, which were always organised in the
most natural way, far removed from cheap sophistications or
expensive tweeness, were attended by Viscountess Jacqueline
de Rives, Roman Polanski, Emmanuelle Seigner, Inmaculada de
Borbón Dos Sicilias, Mariano Tur de Montis, the Marchioness
of Nájera, Marta Moragas, Omar Shariff (with a backgammon
set and a deck of cards to play bridge) Stephano Córdoba,
Marichu Mora, the spy Aline Romanones… It was a golden age,
in which HRH Queen Sofía of Spain went on an official state visit
to Mexico wearing a suit, designed by the brilliant Dora Herbst.
