Publication norms Av Diabetol 2005; 21: 74-75Information for the authorsGENERAL INFORMATION<strong>Avances</strong> <strong>en</strong> Diabetología publishes sci<strong>en</strong>tific studies, systematicreviews, cons<strong>en</strong>sus, clinical notes and experts' opinions inthe field of diabetes and related diseases, in Spanish or in English.The manuscripts s<strong>en</strong>t for publication in "<strong>Avances</strong> <strong>en</strong> Diabetología"will be evaluated by at least 2 in<strong>de</strong>p<strong>en</strong>d<strong>en</strong>t reviewers, chos<strong>en</strong> bythe Editorial Committee. The authors will receive the evaluation oftheir papers in a period of one month and should make the recomm<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>dchanges within 2 weeks of having received them. If thearticle s<strong>en</strong>t to the authors for changes is not received within theperiod proposed, it will be consi<strong>de</strong>red as a new manuscript on arrival.Review Articles. These collaborations will <strong>de</strong>al with state ofthe arts subjects or those of g<strong>en</strong>eral interest in the field of diabetes.The journal Director will request them from national or internationalexperts.<strong>Diabetes</strong> Seminars. These papers will <strong>de</strong>al with subjectsdirectly related to the common clinical practice in diabetes. Theirobjective is to contribute to continuing training in the field of diabetes.The Editorial Committee will request them from key specialistsin the subject proposed. The same gui<strong>de</strong>lines as <strong>de</strong>tailedfor original articles will be followed for their elaboration.Original Articles. These manuscripts will refer to clinical orexperim<strong>en</strong>tal research studies on diabetes. They will be assessedfor their originality, <strong>de</strong>sign and clear pres<strong>en</strong>tation. They should notexceed eight double-spaced printed pages or a maximum of 3000words that inclu<strong>de</strong> title, text and acknowledgem<strong>en</strong>ts (this does notinclu<strong>de</strong> the summary, refer<strong>en</strong>ces, tables or figures). No more than30 refer<strong>en</strong>ces or more than 4 tables or figures will be allowed. Therecomm<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>d number of authors should not exceed six.Clinical Notes. These manuscripts will be the most a<strong>de</strong>quateto <strong>de</strong>scribe one or more cases of diabetes with exceptional interest.They should be a maximum of 3 printed pages or 1200 words,including title, text and acknowledgem<strong>en</strong>ts. No more than 10 refer<strong>en</strong>cesor 2 tables or figures will be allowed. The number of authorsrecomm<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>d should not exceed four.Letters to the Editor. They will inclu<strong>de</strong> opinions, observationsas clinical experi<strong>en</strong>ces on diabetological aspects of g<strong>en</strong>eralinterest. They should not exceed one page or 400 words, includingtitle and text. No more than 3 refer<strong>en</strong>ces, more than 1 table or figureor more than 2 manuscript signing authors will be allowed.Other sections. “<strong>Avances</strong> <strong>en</strong> Diabetología” will also inclu<strong>de</strong>other sections such as Editorials, Cons<strong>en</strong>sus Docum<strong>en</strong>ts, Docum<strong>en</strong>tsfrom the Spanish Society of <strong>Diabetes</strong> Work Groups, News,Comm<strong>en</strong>ts on national and international congresses, book reviewsand other information of interest. In g<strong>en</strong>eral, the cont<strong>en</strong>t of thesesections will be established by or<strong>de</strong>r of the journal Director. Wh<strong>en</strong>everpossible, they should be s<strong>en</strong>t in the format accepted forthe remaining articles.<strong>Avances</strong> <strong>en</strong> Diabetología will not publish studies that havebe<strong>en</strong> published previously or that are simultaneously being consi<strong>de</strong>redfor some type of publication.All the manuscripts should be typed double-spaced and theletter type size used should not be less than 11 points.The manuscripts should be s<strong>en</strong>t by E-mail to Mrs. Carm<strong>en</strong>Rodríguez (carm<strong>en</strong>.rodriguez@ergon.es), secretary of Ergon. Thematrix docum<strong>en</strong>t should be id<strong>en</strong>tified as the main docum<strong>en</strong>t. Tablesand figures should be s<strong>en</strong>t, duly id<strong>en</strong>tified, in separate docum<strong>en</strong>ts.Photographs should be black and white and with excell<strong>en</strong>t quality.The Editorial committee may request, if necessary, that thecomplete paper or some of its parts be pres<strong>en</strong>ted in another specificformat.All the manuscripts should be accompanied by a letter writt<strong>en</strong>by the first author of the study, who will be responsible for it forall effects. The letter should expressly state that the other signersof the paper agree with the publication of the manuscript in theform and cont<strong>en</strong>t s<strong>en</strong>t to the journal Director.Manuscripts will not be admitted in paper form, except un<strong>de</strong>rspecial circumstances. SpainINFORMATION SPECIFIED FOR THE ELABORATION OF THEARTICLESThe following should be inclu<strong>de</strong>d on the first page of themanuscript:• Title of the paper• Names of the authors (name and complete last name)• Institution where it was done.• Title in English.• Correspond<strong>en</strong>ce Address, E-mail address and contact telephone.• Short title, to print on the heading of the insi<strong>de</strong> pages of thearticle.• Word count, including title, text and acknowledgem<strong>en</strong>ts.• List of acronyms.The second page should inclu<strong>de</strong> the summary, which shouldnot exceed 250 words. The study objective, methodology used, resultsand conclusions reached should be clearly and concisely <strong>de</strong>scribedin it. At the <strong>en</strong>d of the summary, 3-6 key words that <strong>de</strong>fine thefundam<strong>en</strong>tal subject of the paper should be inclu<strong>de</strong>d. Furthermorea summary in English, including the key words in English, shouldbe inclu<strong>de</strong>d on a separate page. These should be equival<strong>en</strong>t to the<strong>de</strong>scriptors of the In<strong>de</strong>x Medicus (Medical Subject Headings, MESH).
Publication norms Vol. 21 Núm. 1 - <strong>en</strong>ero-marzo 2005 75Beginning on page three, the article should be <strong>de</strong>scribed accordingto the following sections: Introduction, Material and Methods,Results, Discussion and Refer<strong>en</strong>ces. The Introduction should <strong>de</strong>scribethe reasons why the study has be<strong>en</strong> done, avoiding comm<strong>en</strong>tson the findings and conclusions obtained. Material and Methodsshould give a <strong>de</strong>scriptive report on the pati<strong>en</strong>ts inclu<strong>de</strong>d inthe study, materials used and their origin and the statistical methodsused. The Results should be clearly pres<strong>en</strong>ted and follow alogical or<strong>de</strong>r in their pres<strong>en</strong>tation. They cannot be simultaneouslypres<strong>en</strong>ted in the text and in tables or figures. In the Discussion, theauthors should provi<strong>de</strong> an interpretation and comparison of theresults with the pertin<strong>en</strong>t information available in the sci<strong>en</strong>tific literature,avoiding speculations or repetitions of the results. The Conclusionsshould be <strong>de</strong>tailed in the final paragraph of the manuscript.The Editorial Board reserves the right to summarize the threemost relevant aspects of the paper in or<strong>de</strong>r to place it in a summarytable at its <strong>en</strong>d.Prior to the refer<strong>en</strong>ces, if consi<strong>de</strong>red necessary, aspects suchas study financing, previous pres<strong>en</strong>tation of the study in a sci<strong>en</strong>tificCongress or acknowledgem<strong>en</strong>ts may be briefly summarized inthe Acknowledgem<strong>en</strong>ts.REFERENCESThe refer<strong>en</strong>ces should be inclu<strong>de</strong>d in the text with Arabic numbersin superscript and without par<strong>en</strong>thesis, with consecutive numberingaccording to their appearance in the text, tables and figures.Wh<strong>en</strong> several correlative refer<strong>en</strong>ces are cited, the number of thefirst and last, separated by a dash, should be specified. Wh<strong>en</strong> thecitation is placed together with a punctuation sign, the citations shouldprece<strong>de</strong> the sign (for example: observed with sulfonylureas 2 , biguani<strong>de</strong>s3 and glitazones 4-8 ). The use of hyperlinks in word processorsfor citation of refer<strong>en</strong>ces in the manuscript should be avoi<strong>de</strong>d.The Refer<strong>en</strong>ces should be inclu<strong>de</strong>d on a separate page afteracknowledgem<strong>en</strong>ts. The refer<strong>en</strong>ces should be consecutively numberedin the same or<strong>de</strong>r as they have be<strong>en</strong> cited in the manuscript.Wh<strong>en</strong> the refer<strong>en</strong>ces are first cited in the tables or figures, theyshould be numbered, respecting this or<strong>de</strong>r in relationship withthose that are th<strong>en</strong> cited in the text. Refer<strong>en</strong>ce style and pres<strong>en</strong>tationshould follow the format proposed by the Vancouver groupand abbreviations of the journals should be adjusted to those usedby In<strong>de</strong>x medicus. Each oneof them should have its corresponding title and leg<strong>en</strong>d if necessary.Tables including an elevated number of data will not be accepted.FIGURESThe figures should be inclu<strong>de</strong>d on separate pages after the tables.They should be <strong>de</strong>signed professionally and pres<strong>en</strong>ted as black andwhite photographs. Symbols, letter and numbers should have a continuousline and be clear and their size should be suffici<strong>en</strong>tly largeto be legible after reduction prior to their incorporation into the journalpages. If photographs of pati<strong>en</strong>ts are used, their id<strong>en</strong>tificationshould be avoi<strong>de</strong>d, and if this is not possible, writt<strong>en</strong> authorizationof the pati<strong>en</strong>t should be attached. The leg<strong>en</strong>ds should be inclu<strong>de</strong>dat the <strong>en</strong>d, together, on a separate sheet, typed double-spaced.Illustrations will only be published on rare occasions in color,and wh<strong>en</strong> this occurs, the authors will be charged the costs fortheir reproduction.ACRONYMSGreat care should be tak<strong>en</strong> in the use of acronyms, avoidingthe use of more than 5-6 in all the text. Wh<strong>en</strong> they are used for thefirst time, they should be prece<strong>de</strong>d by the words they repres<strong>en</strong>tand cited in par<strong>en</strong>thesis.DENOMINATIONS FOR DRUGSIn g<strong>en</strong>eral, g<strong>en</strong>eric names should be used, however if the authorswant to, they can insert it in par<strong>en</strong>thesis followed by the commercialnames.AUTHORIZATIONSIn those cases where material from other publications is used,these should be accompanied by the writt<strong>en</strong> permission of its authorand the corresponding Publishing firm, authorizing its reproductionin our journal.volver sumario
