La llama panamericana será encendida en el Estadio Nacional en una ceremonia que escenificará un ritual inca ante 50.000 espectadores. La antorcha llegará al coliseo tras recorrer durante 23 días diferentes regiones <strong>de</strong>l país, <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> la ciuda<strong>de</strong>la inca <strong>de</strong> Machu Picchu. El miércoles comenzaron las competencias <strong>de</strong> voleibol playa y balonmano, a pesar <strong>de</strong> que los Juegos no han sido abiertos oficialmente. Para atraer a las mejores estrellas <strong>de</strong>portivas <strong>de</strong>l continente, 21 disciplinas serán clasificatorias a los Juegos Olímpicos <strong>de</strong> Tokio-2020. En Toronto-2015 solo fueron 12. Cuba, por primera vez <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> 1971, llega a unos Panamericanos sin ser la segunda potencia continental, condición que perdió en Toronto-2015 al terminar en el cuarto puesto, por <strong>de</strong>bajo <strong>de</strong>l anfitrión Canadá y <strong>de</strong> Brasil. Con 1.948 oros acumulados <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> 1951, Estados Unidos parece insuperable en esta justa, que culminará el 11 <strong>de</strong> agosto y en la que competirán 6.680 atletas <strong>de</strong> 41 países y territorios <strong>de</strong> toda América. Estados Unidos llega con el veterano velocista Justin Gatlin (37 años), actual campeón mundial <strong>de</strong> los 100 metros (Londres-2017), campeón olímpico en Atenas-2004 y dos veces suspendido por dopaje. Competirá en el relevo 4x100 junto a Cravon Gillespie, Justin Robinson y Kenny Bednarek. Los limeños podrán asistir a competencias en 61 disciplinas y 39 <strong>de</strong>portes, <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> equitación al surf, en 21 se<strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong> Lima y <strong>de</strong>l vecino puerto <strong>de</strong>l Callao. Se estima que unos 400 millones <strong>de</strong> personas verán por televisión la inauguración <strong>de</strong> los Panamericanos, la tercera competencia multi<strong>de</strong>portiva más gran<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>l mundo, sólo superada por los Juegos Olímpicos y los Juegos Asiáticos.
