Brenda FajardoSiya, Ikaw, At Ako (1/15) intaglio (etching), 59 x 78 cm, 1976Brenda Fajardo (b. 1940, Manila) is a painter, printmaker, theaterset designer, art educator, scholar, and community organizer. She isProfessor Emerita at the Department of Art Studies in the Universityof the Philippines (UP) in Diliman. She received her bachelor’sdegree in Agriculture from UP Los Banos in 1959 and her master’sin Art Education from the University of Wisconsin in Madisonin 1967, where she wrote the thesis “A basis for art education inthe Philippines.” In the same year, with fellow artist and educatorAraceli Dans, she founded the Philippine Art Educators Association(PAEA), which spearheaded training programs and resourcedevelopment for visual arts teachers in the country. In 1970, shejoined the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA)as set designer and eventually became the curriculum head for itsworkshops. She was one of the founding members of the Kasibulan(Kababaihan sa Sining at Bagong Sibol na Kamalayan) in 1987.134She received the Thirteen Artists grant from the Cultural Center ofthe Philippines (CCP) in 1992 and the CCP Centennial Honors forthe Arts in 1999. She has been teaching with the UP Departmentof Art Studies (formerly Department of Humanities [established1959]) since 1976 and eventually became its Chairperson. Shewas the curator of the UP Vargas Museum from 1995 to 2001.She became the Vice-Chairperson of the National Commission forCulture and the Arts Committee on Visual Arts (NCCA-CVA) in1995 and its Chairperson in 1998. In 1996, as a member of NCCA-CVA’s education subcommittee, she directed the 1st Sungdu-an, anational travelling exhibition. She received her PhD in PhilippineStudies from UP in 1997. Throughout her career, she foundedother arts and cultural organizations such as the Baglan Art andCulture Initiatives for Community Development in 1993 and theDalubhasan sa Sining at Kultura (DESK) in 2002.
