Your personal situation
Do you have the stamina and the good health to engage in a rigorous campaign? How much of your money are
you ready to devote to the campaign? Are you in formal employment and what does it mean for your campaign?
Can the salary earned in public office sustain your livelihood?
Your network (individual and institutional contacts)
What are your networks and strategic contacts and how can they be called upon to support your candidature?
Which leaders in the private and public sectors can, for instance, be called upon to help your bid for elective
office? What would the value of their contribution be?
Your advantages
What are your comparative advantages? In other words, in what areas are you better than your opponent by far?
What are your competitive advantages? In other words, what are the areas in which your opponent is as good as
you but you have the ability to do better than him or her? What are your strong and weak areas? What are your
threats? Can you turn-around your weaknesses into strengths and minimize your risks? Are they areas you are
able to compensate for or minimize?
Money
How much money is required to win this race? Can you raise it? Do you know people who can support your
race? Is your family able to raise some of the money required? Does raising money intimidate you? Can you
afford a fundraiser or do you know one who can volunteer to help you?
Staff
Do you have people who can run a campaign? Who are you likely to appoint to the key campaign positions and
are they available? Of the potential staff, who are volunteers and who will be full-time?
What is your platform?
What are the issues you hope to stand for? How important are they to the majority of the potential voters? Are
they vote-winning issues and have they been articulated in the past? What is new and unique about the way you
will approach the issues during campaign? What is the relationship between the issues and the voters? Are all
the issues important to the majority of the potential voters, men, women and youth alike?
Can you win?
What are the chances of winning the race? Consider the following:
• Are you running on the ticket of the "correct" or "right" party?
• Is the incumbent a vulnerable candidate -- how and why?
• How many other candidates are in the race and what are their advantages?
• What are your chances of winning the party nomination?
• Do you have a bloc of core support in the constituency? If not, can this support be created?
