In the framework of the exceptional exhibition, Contemporary Art and the French Riviera, A
Territory for Experimentation, the Espace de l’Art Concret presents a panorama of work by living
artists as seen through the eyes of certain collectors from the region. The project examines
the practice of installation art and on-site work by offering each artist an occasion to conceive a
piece (financed and acquired by the collector) which will first be installed in the Castle gallery of
the Espace de l’Art Concret and subsequently be integrated into the collector’s private collection.
This exhibition brings together ten artists in association with nine collectors, or couples who
collect, for the conception of nine projects which must be integrated into two exhibition spaces
completely different in both architecture and function.
The title of the exhibition, « Collectors on site » emphasizes the active role played by the
collectors who experience here a new relationship with a work of art: one with a work in process.
The dialogue between artist and collector also opens up to another interlocutor: the institution,
initiator and pivot of the project. The Espace de l’Art Concret, fruit of a private initiative and a
political choice, seems the ideal site for such an exhibition. In the same way the Castle, a
building from the private sector transformed into an art center open to the public, allows us to put
into perspective the sometimes ambiguous relationships that art maintains with commissions
and decorum.
