L’ILLUSTRATION SE COMPOSE D’UN FRONTISPICE EN COULEURS REPRÉSENTANT L’AUTEUR CHASSANT DES PAPILLONS DANS UNE FORÊT, D’UN DIAGRAMME ANATOMIQUE, ET DE 44 SUPERBES PLANCHES À PLEINE PAGE DESSINÉES, GRAVÉES ET COLORIÉES PAR L’AUTEUR LUI-MÊME D’APRÈS NATURE. Ces planches d’une élégance et d’une grâce rares représentent les papillons et les chenilles replacés dans leur contexte, avec les plantes dont ils se nourrissent. Les 46 planches ont été coloriées à la main par Harris lui-même dans des tons très vifs, et rehaussées à la gomme arabique. « It would seem that Harris insisted on maintaining at all times a high standard of accuracy in his engraving and colouring » (Lisney, p. 157). AUCUN EXEMPLAIRE N’EST RÉPERTORIÉ DANS LES COLLECTIONS PUBLIQUES. (OCLC) Exceedingly rare proof copy of Harris’ masterpiece dedicated to butterflies. Neither Nissen nor Hagun knew this edition. The present edition is described under the number 236 of Lisney’s bibliography. The frontispiece appears for the first time here in colours and the plates are printed on glossy paper. « Fourth Edition, proof copies. The text has been supplied from the third edition, n°234. After it was decided to publish a new edition of the Aurelian edited by Westwood, proofs were presumably pulled from the original blocks of the frontispiece and plates, on glossy paper similar to that used in n° 237. A proof of a new title-page and a printing of Westwood’s systematic nomenclature was prepared, to which was added the text from an earlier edition. No doubt these and possibly other proof copies were issued so that the editor could decide to what extent alterations were necessary in the new edition. This, when published in 1840, followed more closely the text of the third edition, n° 234 […]. The proof copies were probably issued about 1839” (Lisney). The illustration consists of 1 frontispiece in colours, 1 key plate and 44 superb full-page plates that were drawn, engraved and coloured by the author himself from life. A fine copy of this very interesting edition, of which only a few copies were issued. It is complete and preserved in its contemporary half-morocco binding decorated with butterflies. No copy of this edition is recorded in any public collection (OCLC). 106
