John Martin Bernatz (1802-1878) est l’artiste officiel qui accompagna l’expédition financée par le
gouvernement britannique en 1841 et qui avait pour but de développer des relations commerciales
avec l’ancien royaume de Shoa. Cette ambassade était dirigée par William Cornwallis Harris.
« This collection of coloured plates comprises the first scenes of Shawa ever produced and are of a
high quality. The first volume, ‘The Lowlands of the Danakil’, contains scenes of Tajurah, a slave
caravan from the interior and Oromo dancing. The second volume, ‘The Highlands of Shoa’, presents
us with views of Ankobar, King Sahla Sellase sitting in judgement, an Easter banquet, military
manoeuvres and battle scenes, a religious procession, a slave market, male and female costume, etc.”

First edition of the most important illustrated book about Ethiopia from the 19 th century.
It’s one of the few descriptions of everyday life in Ethiopia in the middle of the 19 th century.

The rich illustration consists of 2 lithographed titles, one lithographed map of Ethiopia and 48
full-page plates in colours after Bernatz.
The 48 plates represent sceneries and everyday life scenes observed by the author during his
stay in Ethiopia in the 1840’s.
A fine copy of this interesting work dedicated to the only African country that has never been
colonized. It is preserved in its bookbinder’s cloth in green half-morocco, a hard to find
condition, and is complete with the 48 coloured plates.
