The first edition, first issue, of Flaubert’s masterpiece, untrimmed and wide-margined.
That’s one of only 78 copies printed on vellum paper. The present copy was offered by Flaubert
to his friend Alfred Baudry, with the autograph dedication: “A mon ami, très cher / Al. Baudry /
le seul qui vienne me voir / dans ma solitude / rustique. / L’auteur indigne / Gustave Flaubert » on
the half-title.
This copy is recorded under the n° 42 by Auguste Lambiotte in the list he drew up of the 48 largepaper
and dedicated copies of “Madame Bovary”.
Alfred Baudry (1828-1884) was the younger brother of Frédéric Baudry, the Arsenal’s librarian
and a member of the Institute. While Flaubert was writing “Madame Bovary”, he asked Alfred
Baudry to check out some locations such as Rouen.
A superb copy dedicated and printed on large-paper.
It comes from Alfred Baudry, Léon Schnuck and Robert von Hirsch collections.
This copy appeared in the exhibition “Dix Siècles de Livres français” (Lucerne, 1949).
