PRESIDENT’S MESSAGETaking Stock of the CostsThe implementation of the regulations, both atthe Chambre de la sécurité financière and at theBureau des services financiers, is changing the waythings are done and is raising questions. The newpublication, Sécurité financière, is designed toguide members by giving them the informationthey need to conduct business. Therefore, Iwould like to take this opportunity to welcomeour new readers. In addition to our new responsibilities, one ofthe changes brought about pertains to the costsrelated to practising in various sectors. Some ofyou may have been charged two, three or evenfour contributions to the Chamber. Please realize that this has put us in an awkwardposition, and that we have initiated discussionswith the Finance department to solve this problem. Our goal is to treat all Chamber membersequitably, that is, one same contribution payableby each person.A number of you have asked about the fees theChamber charges for keeping the records of professionaldevelopment units (PDUs). This isanother point which, together with the review ofthe contribution, could be changed to make iteasier and less costly for members.Continuing along the same lines, the Chamberand the Institut québécois de planification financière(IQPF) have reached an agreement in principlefor the accreditation of activities and PDUrecord keeping for financial planners and thosepractising in other sectors. The two entities have endeavoured to simplifymatters so as to avoid duplicating administrativeprocedures. This is a fine example of the valuesthat guide the Chamber in the implementationof its activities. ■The President,Alain PoirierFinancial Security Advisor10Others may have felt a sense of frustration at therising cost of continuing education activities inthe sections. I would like to point out that theChamber’s goal was not to be the sole distributorof training in Quebec, but to guarantee theavailability and quality of the training dispensedprovince-wide. We must make sure that ouractivities are fully self-financed and that the costsare borne equitably by all members, whetherthey are in the regions or in urban centres.Avril 2000
