The boat trip was very long.
The boy was from the gulf of Benin and I arrived in America to be
sold as a slave.
Jack arrived in this new world. What struck me first was that the
houses were built with stories and were different from those in Africa.
I arrived at the slave market. I didn‟t know what it was. When I arrived
in America I was sent to a tobacco plantation.
At the beat of a drum the buyers rushed where the slaves were
confined and made their choices. There were several brothers, who, in
the sale, were sold in different lots. It was very moving to see and hear
their cries.
I tried to run away. I worked hard in the fields and it was very difficult. I saw a doctor to be sold in
good health. I was fed in troughs, under the house. If I didn‟t work hard enough, I was whipped: it was
painful. The owner was very nasty: This situation was dreadful so I decided to run away. I ran very
fast…a dog caught me. I was brought back the tobacco plantation.
The owner confined Jack in a dark place during one week. It was not pleasant because I was fed a little:
it was cornmeal mush and beans.
