The sold of Arthuro
was chained in a cage with the other people who where captured. I saw them and they seemed
very sad, as if they would die. Suddenly, I heard the
beat of a drum and the buyers rushed where the slaves
were confined and made their choices. A white person
came to me and started to examine me. I started trembling
and began to pray discreetly. I tried to struggle but I was
whipped so I calmed down. Already my feet were hurting
me, then, my back too because of the whip. He examined
my teeth, arms, head, feet and legs and it was very strange.
When he finished, he left me alone and started to talk with the seller. The overseer gave us a dirty look.
Another prisoner told me that our supervisor was the meanest man on earth. Then, I focused on the
conversation with the seller. I didn't understand what they were saying because I never went into
books, I never went to school and this wasn‟t my language. A few
moments later, other white people came to me but the first person
who examined me shouted at him. I didn't understand, again, but
he seemed angry. There were several brothers, who, in the sale,
were sold separately. It was very moving to see and hear their
cries. I waited a long moment and the person untied me. Then, he
tied my hands and my neck. I could barely move. I was bought 1500 pounds by George Washington.
He seemed nice but I didn‟t know what I would have to do… I knew, thanks to another black person,
that we were sold to white persons and we had to work for them but I didn‟t know more. Even if he
seemed nice, the panic took me.
