I never went into books and I never went to school.
My master lived on a plantation in the South, his
name was Mr. John. The slaves worked in the fields.
No Negros slaves were allowed to go beyond the
confines of his owner's plantation without written
permission.
I was whipped when I did not work hard enough. The slaves were obliged to work otherwise they
were killed, they were tied to chains that held their necks and arms to them their much serrated. I was
locked in a cellar for not escaping. It took me a long time to get over my scared feeling because there
was so much danger. Our masters made us read the Bible. When we walked we were chained together.
I have already tried to escape from the plantation but I
never succeeded. I had very bad under my feet because the
Negro boys were not allowed to wear shoes until 12 or 14
years of age. I had to bring back cotton and sugar cane on
the plantation. I ate boiled corn and beans, it was not
good.
