My new life in America
We arrived at Charleston port. Our hands and our feet
were chained. The slave men were to unloaded first boys
and the girls. A white man came for us; He put an iron
muzzle that closed our mouths so we could barely speak
and could not eat or drink. I was terribly scared! We
arrived at the slave market. I didn‟t know what it was. The
white man was wearing a hat. He had long straight blond
hair, a jacket in fur of stoat. I looked around me. There were the big houses. They had some floors.
One, two or three floor! I didn‟t know how the houses held up! We were given cornmeal, mush and
beans. The white people arrived. They were murmured then were cried “One thousand!”; “Two
thousand! This moment was very special: The white man looked closely at me. He looked at my face,
my teeth, my hands, my feet… A muscular man walked to us. He called to the white man. When he
cried “Ten thousand”, the white people turned around him. I was sold to this muscular man. My
master lived on a plantation in the South. My new life started.
