I was young, maybe twelve when this nightmare began…
There were several reasons of my running away:
Everyday, we worked hard in the fields: I used to have to pick
cotton and sometimes I picked 300 pounds and took it to the cotton
house which was a mile away. We weren‟t pay and if we didn‟t work
hard enough, we were whipped. We weren‟t allowed to wear shoes;
it was painful because I had many injuries: scars on my feet. I was
cried every night in my bed and I couldn‟t fall asleep. No Negro
slave was allowed to go beyond the confines of his owner's
plantation without written permission. On this "pass" was written the name of the Negro, the place he was
permitted to visit, and the time had to return but I couldn‟t stand this situation anymore…
I decided to steal some food from the plantation at night…so I could be strong enough during the next couple
of days. I was just looking for freedom and I wanted to run away. It was the only chance to escape this bad
destiny.
It was time to go or not…
I said: “come on, let‟s go and run as fast as you can!” The enterprise
looked amazing and I wasn‟t sure at all that my dream would come true
but I ran away. My legs were sore after maybe three hours but I had a
great feeling like flying as a bird. The landscape looked almost the
same. I was exhausted but I wasn‟t that far from my goal: FREEDOM!
I had to continue, it was really important…
After a few hours, maybe four or five, I had a rest and I used this
time to eat some food stolen the last night in the plantation because I was so tired. I had no power anymore...It
was dark and I just found a place to sleep in the bush. In the morning, I started to run again without any idea of
the right direction: I tried to follow my instinct. I was on the way to write new pages of my life; everything was
possible.
