Un luthier au parcours atypique
Ramaroson Mamiharijaona, alias Jonharp, ce
Professeur à l’Ecole Supérieure Polytechnique de
Diégo, a tout fait pour connaître, pour fabriquer
de la harpe et pour en jouer. Nous avons retracé le
parcours de ce musicien et luthier atypique.

A stringed-instrument maker with
an atypical background
Ramaroson Mamiharijaona, alias Jonharp, a
professor at Ecole Supérieure Polytechnique of
Diégo, has done everything he could to fabricate
and play harp. Let’s go back over his impressive
professional journey as a musician and as an
atypical luthier.
At the age of 15, according the
information I had, I began to
manufacture my own instrument.
Prime Magazine: Comment êtes-vous devenu passionné de
harpe, un instrument peu connu à Madagascar ?
Jonharp : Je n’avais que 10 ans en 1965. La Radio
nationale diffusait une musique –que la chaîne utilisait
comme indicatif d’émission - qui a attiré mon attention. Je
suis allé demander auprès du producteur de l’émission. Ce
technicien m’a indiqué que c’était une harpe. C’est là que
tout a commencé.
Prime Magazine: How did you become harp enthusiast, a
little-known instrument in Madagascar?
Jonharp : I was only 10 years old in 1965. The National
Radio was broadcasting a music (which was the theme tune
for radio program), that caught my attention. Then, I went
to the radio station and asked the producer. This technician
declared that it was a harp. That's how it all started.
Prime Magazine: Cela n’a pas dû être facile pour vous à
l’époque…
Jonharp : En effet, très peu de gens connaissait la harpe.
Alors, j’ai fait le tour des bibliothèques d’Antananarivo
pour me documenter. A 15 ans, avec les éléments en ma
possession, je me suis mis à fabriquer mon instrument
avec lequel j’ai appris à jouer. Depuis, j’ai continué à enrichir
mes connaissances en lutherie.
Prime Magazine: It cannot have been easy at that time ...
Jonharp : In point of fact, very few people knew this
musical instrument. Therefore, I walked down to many
libraries of Antananarivo to collect information. At the
age of 15, according the information I had, I began to
manufacture my own instrument with which I learned
to play. Since then, I have continued to strengthen my
knowledge in the art of string instrument making.
Prime Magazine: Votre rencontre avec un harpiste
paraguayen vous a beaucoup aidé.
Jonharp: Lorsque j’ai poursuivi mes études supérieures
à Lausanne, j’ai fait la rencontre de José Gille Brizuela,
un grand harpiste paraguayen. Il m’a donné des cours de
harpe. Ce musicien a mis à ma disposition un instrument
et je m’en suis inspiré pour améliorer ma technique de
fabrication.
Prime Magazine: Your meeting with a paraguayan harpist
has helped you a lot.
Jonharp : When I pursued my higher education in
Lausanne, I met José Gille Brizuela, a great Paraguayan
harpist. Thus, he gave me some harp lessons and provided
me an instrument. Consequently, I was inspired to better
my skills concerning manufacturing these instruments.
