Il monastero buddista di Phuktal si trova a 4000 metri di altitudine, nella
regione dello Zanskar, in Himalaya. Incastonato nelle rocce, per mesi e
mesi immerso nella neve e nel gelo, questo luogo sembra appartenere a un
altro pianeta. I monaci vi trascorrono un’esistenza secondo canoni di vita
medievali. Questa vita, con i suoi orari, le sue usanze, i suoi ritmi, le sue
preghiere, i suoi silenzi, è quella che ha trascorso per tre mesi la regista del
fi lm, Marianne Chaud, condividendo quotidianamente la vita di questi
monaci buddisti e dei giovani scolari che vivono lassù. Tra di loro il piccolo
Kenrap, 8 anni. Marianne è accanto a lui, assiste alle sue lezioni di fi losofi a,
lo accompagna mentre canta le sacre melodie, guarda i suoi giochi e ascolta
le sue preghiere. Kenrap è considerato la reincarnazione di un monaco di 68
anni e, sebbene i suoi anni siano eff ettivamente 60 di meno, la sua consapevolezza
e lo sguardo con cui guarda il mondo sembrano davvero quelli del
suo predecessore. La sicurezza da adulto con cui compie i gesti quotidiani o
le camminate nella neve, a strapiombo sulla profonda valle, si contrappone
alla tenerezza del bambino, felice di vivere in quel mondo che gli fa scacciare
anche la nostalgia di casa.
Th e Buddhist monastery in Phuktal is located some 4000 metres above sea level,
in the Zanskar region of the Himalayas. Set into the rocks, and immersed
in snow and ice for months on end, this site seems to belong to another planet.
Th e monks live according to canons of the Middle Ages. Th e director of the
fi lm, Marianne Chaud, experienced this life with its rhythms, customs, prayers
and silences, for the three months during which she shared the daily routines
of these Buddhist monks and the young scholars who reside up there. Among
them is little Kenrap, eight years old. Marianne is close to him and sits in on
his philosophy lessons, accompanies him while he sings the sacred melodies,
watches him play, and listens to his prayers. Kenrap is considered the reincarnation
of a sixty-eight-year-old monk and although his years are actually sixty
fewer, his awareness and the expression with which he looks at his world truly
seem those of his predecessor. Th e assuredness of an adult that he brings to every
day gestures and the walks through deep snow on high ridges overhanging
the deep valley, contrast with the tenderness of this child who is happy to live
in that world that even helps him to forget his homesickness.
Marianne Chaud
Nata nel 1976, si è diplomata all’École des Hautes
Études en Sciences Sociales a Parigi. Per la
sua tesi di laurea ha iniziato a occuparsi dello
Zanskar, dove ritorna regolarmente trascorrendo
molti mesi in diversi villaggi, vivendo con le
famiglie, adottando i loro costumi e parlando
la loro lingua. Nel 2006 ha partecipato alla produzione
del fi lm Becoming a Woman in Zanskar
come co-autrice e nel 2007 ha girato il suo
primo e pluripremiato documentario, Himalaya,
land of women.
Born in1976, she earned a diploma from the
École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales
in Paris. For her degree thesis, she became
interested in Zanskar, where she returns on a
regular basis, spending many months in various
villages, living with families, adopting their
customs and speaking their language. In 2006
she participated in the production of the fi lm,
Becoming a Woman in Zanskar, as co-writer and
in 2007 made her multi-award-winning documentary,
Himalaya, Land of Women.
