fielding a trio of King Air 350 aircraft
equipped for intelligence, surveillance
and reconnaissance (ISR), while the EJC
flies a pair of Commuter Air Technology
CATPASS 250 aircraft (modified King Air
200s) that have been equipped with what
is believed to be either the Elta Systems
EL/K-7044 or EL/1-3120 integrated intelligence
suite, both of which incorporate
a COMINT component. For their part, the
FAC King Air 350s appear to have been
equipped with the same contractor's
EL/1-3120 multi-mission ISR suite (again
incorporating a COMINT component) and
to have been operated by the service's
Escuadr6n de lnteligencia Aérea 831
(831st Air Intelligence Squadron) based
at Bogota's El Dorado International Airport.
Sadly, one of the unit's King Airs
was lost in an operational accident that
occurred in September 2010, killing all
six crew members. On a happier note,
the FAC's fleet of Kfir combat aircraft
are aU said to be equipped with an enhanced
EW suite "of Israeli origin" and
are currently the subject of a planned
avionic upgrade that is expected to include
an EW component.
As befits its status as an evolving regional
super power, Brazil's Força Aérea
Brasilia (FAB - Brazilian Air Force) is
increasingly well equipped with airborne
EW systems both for surveillance
applications and to protect its combat
aircraft. On the surveillance side of the
house, the service has embarked on a
program to modify three Learjet VU-
35A transports to R-35AM standard for
electronic intelligence (ELINT) duties.
Here, the capability is built around
Thales France's DR 3000A equipment and
the new platforms are understood to be
scheduled for assignment to the FAB's
1° Esquadrào (Squadron) "Carcara" at
Recife on Brazil's northeast coast. Elsewhere
within the FAB inventory, the
service's E-99 (formerly EMB-145SA/R-
99A) AEW aircraft are equipped with a
CommunicationsjNon-Communications
Exploitation System (CNCES) that is understood
to be made up of ITT Electronic
Systems radar-band and DRS Technologies
communication-band electronic
support (ES) sub-systems. For its part,
the FAB R-99 (formerly EMB-145RS/R-
99B) remote sensing platform is fitted
with a similar CNCES capability, with
both types assigned to the service's
6° Grupo de Aviaçào's (GAv - Aviation
Group) 2° Esquadrào home-based at
Anapolis.
Elsewhere within the Brazilian military,
the Comando de Força Aeronaval
(Naval Air Arm) is pursuing a program
to field three carrier-capable, Turbo
Tracker-type AEW platforms whose mission
suite will include an ES capability.
Returning to the FAB, JED understands
that its A-1A/-1B (AMX), F-5EM/-5FM
and F-2000B/-2000C (ex-French Air Force
Mirage 2000Cs) combat aircraft all have
some form of EW provision. In order, the
A-1A/-1B strike aircraft was originally
equipped with Elettronica's ELT/156 Radar
Warning Receiver (RWR) and is the
subject of an Elbit-led avionics upgrade
that includes Elisra EW equipment. Elisra
is also understood to be the source
for the RWRs installed aboard at least
11 (if not all) of the FAB's F-5EM and F-
5FM. fighters. Las t but not least, the service's
F-2000B/Cs were equipped with an
EW suite that includes Thales France's
Serval RWR and Sabre radar jammer
