all’originario splendore.
BreMe.
the ChurCh of santa Maria DeLLe Grazie is the Marian Sanctuary of the diocese,
built thanks to a miracle recovery of a young paralytic boy that happened on March the 25 th 1609, the
feast of the Annunciation. Unlike other churches, a Sanctuary is built on a place chosen by God not
by humans. But few know that this church is a Sanctuary: during the Carmelite years, it was called
Santa Teresa, in honour of the founder of the Discalced Carmelites. At the end of XIVth century bishop
Riboldi called here the Salesians to create an oratory like the one by Don Bosco, great worshipper of
Maria Ausiliatrice.
s. Maria Di CanePanova. The Sanctuary of S. Maria di Canepanova dates back to the XVth
century, when a pretty fresco depicting Mary, by an anonymous painter from XVth cent, worked
some miracles. The building started at the beginning of 1500, thanks to the brotherhood of Santa
Maria di Canepanova first, and the Barnabites then. The friars managed the Sanctuary until 1810,
when Napoleon issued the decree of suppression of religious orders, and the church was maintained
as subsidiary of the parish of San Francesco, while since 1915 the building has been managed by the
Friars Minor of San Francesco, that, between 1960-1961, extensively restored the place to bring it
to its ancient beauty.
BreMe. Church of santa Maria di Pollicino. The small church, older than the Abbey, belonged to
the “curtis” of Pollicino or Polliciano (the etymology comes from “Padi Limus” Po’s swamp). The curtis,
that today can be identified with cascina Rinalda, was part of the properties that Adalberto d’Ivrea
gave to the monks of Novalesa. The Romanesque style has been modified many times due to the many
reconstructions and changes during the centuries. From an account of a pastoral visit, we know that
in 1576 the front had a porch, the altar was made of gray marble, and the walls inside were painted,
especially the apse; those frescos, today completely vanished, were already fainting, because the visitor
ordered to “renew the paintings”. A drastic restoration took place in 1897, and the last one was in 1958,
when they restored the truss ceiling, the outside pavement, and the altar. In the middle of the altar we
find the wooden statue of Mary, sitting holding the Child, by an anonymous sculptor of the XVth cent.
Nowadays the church belongs to the Tagliabue Family, and visits can be arranged.
di Sant’Agostino, to testify how deeply rooted is the tradition of the passage of the bishop of Hippo.
CerGnaGo. Sanctuary of Madonna di S. Stefano. According to the historian Pezza, its origins date
back in 1100. Tradition narrates that the painting of Mary was in the country, inside the little church
of S. Maria de Melegnano, between Cergnago and Olevano; between the two towns tension arose when
each one claimed possession of the icon, they let fate choose, and Cergnago got it. According to Pezza,
actually, during the XVth cent, the fresco was moved from the small church of Melegnana di Olevano
to S. Stefano courtesy of Marquis Olevano, feudatory of the land. The sanctuary has collapsed and has
been rebuilt three times, the last one was in 1898, and was open to worshippers in 1901. The church
has one nave with a high altar, and two aisles, one dedicated to S. Rocco with a beautiful wooden
truss ceiling. Behind the high altar, there is a fresco depicting the Blessed Virgin of Santo Stefano with
Child, probably an ancient piece in Byzantine style.
Dorno. The history of the Sanctuary of Madonna del Boschetto has been passed down by a statement
of Marquis Luigi Crivelli Scarampi of Dorno to the King of Spain in 1666. A copy of this statement
is kept at the parish records, and, according to that, the Marquis had on his land an aedicule, with a
painting of the Blessed Virgin, called del Boschetto, sitting holding the Child. Due to the many visits
of worshippers and mercies granted, and thanks to the offerings of pilgrims that came also from the
near cities, a small church was built, and Marquis Crivelli granted permission.
frasCaroLo. sanctuary of Madonna del romito.Since medieval time Frascarolo belonged to
the Lomello countryside, ruled by Pavia with emperor Federico I. In 1441 Frascarolo was handed to
Antonio Birago of Milan, and then sold to the Varesini, but came back to Biragos until 1522 when
the feud was distrained upon the family. In 1614 the property was sold to the Bellisomi of Pavia that
kept the lordship until the abolition of feudalism. In 1859 it was annexed to the province of Pavia.
The Church of Madonna del Romito was built in 1599 to guard the miracle painting of Madonna
with S. Stefano and S. Bernardo.
GarLasCo. Among the most important sanctuaries there is the one dedicated to Beata Vergine
della Bozzola, built where, during the second half of XVth cent, a miracle happened. On those fields
a mute shepherd girl was grazing her sheeps. She stopped to pray in front of a small chapel, and she
