Pavia, Basilica di san Pietro in ciel d’oro
Basilica di san Pietro in ciel
d’oro, ricordata da Dante, Petrarca e
Boccaccio.
BasiLiCa of san Pietro in CieL D’oro. It was mentioned by Dante, Petrarca and
Boccaccio. It retains the remains of Severino Boezio. Lombard king Liutprando ordered the
enlargement of the Church around 712 AC, the construction of the adjoining monastery, and the
relocation from Cagliari of the most famous relics held in Pavia: the bones of Saint Augustine, Doctor
of the Church. Saint Augustine’s presence is so important to Pavia that he has been proclaimed patron
of the city, together with San Siro. The beautiful marble sarcophagus, dedicated to the Saint, is
remarkable and was built during the second half of the XIVth century by the Masters of Campione.
Liutprando himself wanted to be buried in his favourite church.
san Gervasio anD Protasio. This early Christian church is related to the burial of the first
bishop and is considered the first cathedral. Since 1216 has been managed by the order of Disciplini,
during the XVIth century became commendam and in 1542 was see of the order of S. Savino. Between
1712/1718 it was rebuilt reversing the original orientation. Since 1782 it has been served by minsters
of Santa Maria Gualtieri, while in 1805 it lost the parish qualification (which was reobtained only
in 1920) and became subsidiary of Santa Maria del Carmine.
ChurCh of santa Maria DeL CarMine. The building of the church began around 1374
with the endowment of Gian Galeazzo Visconti and was completed only a century after. Despite
the slow advances, the church is the result of a harmonious concept, with a propensity, of plan and
elevation, for the entire building. It is attributed to Bernardo da Venezia, and was consecrated in
1511, and it is the most beautiful gothic building in Lombardia, with its triumph of earthenware,
even thought it still maintains some Romanesque elements, like the building material: the red brick.
Second to the Cathedral, it is the largest Church of the city, with a rectangular perimeter of 80m x 40m.
the CatheDraL. It was ordered in
1488 by Ascanio Sforza and Ludovico Pavia, duomo
il Moro. Famous artists like Bramante,
Amadeo and Leonardo da Vinci worked
to the project, and it was built on the ruins
of two adjointed Romanesque churches: S.
Maria del Popolo (the winter church with
one nave and four aisles) and S. Stefano
I LUOGHI DELLA FEDE
Teodoro.
All’interno, un famoso affresco
san Francesco. I Francescani giunsero a Pavia probabilmente intorno
XVIII. Anticamente la chiesa presentava una struttura
simile a S. Teodoro: tre navate, tiburio, cupola e transetto finto.
(the summer church with one nave and two aisles), that were being
demolished as the building of the new vestry proceeded. It has the third
highest dome of Italy, and together with the Towers, stands out against
the sky, overlooking the city, and it is visible by the approaches, guiding
the people to the religious heart of Pavia. The Cathedral retains relics dear
to the locals: the Holy Thorns that came from the crown used to mock
Christ.
BasiLiCa of san teoDoro. It has a peculiar Romanesque front,
and it is dedicated to Bishop Teodoro. Thanks to the proximity of the
church to the river Ticino, the bishop became patron of fishers and of all
the people working on and near the river, like boatmen and laundresses.
On the inside, a famous fresco by Lanzani depicts a view of Pavia in 1522
with its many towers.
BasiLiCa of san MiCheLe. It is famous for its peculiar
front in blonde sandstone, and it is dedicated to the archangel that
was extremely dear to Lombards. When Pavia was the capital, the church of San Michele
was where coronations took place: we can mention those of Berengario I, Berengario II,
Adalberto, Arduino d’Ivrea, Enrico II, and finally, after the rebuilding of the church, the
coronation of Federico Barbarossa (in 1155) with the iron crown of Italy. Full of historical
memories, it is one of the masterpieces of Italian art, for its elegant Romanesque architecture.
san franCesCo. The Franciscans came to Pavia probably around the beginning of the XIIIth
century. Their first church was outside the city walls, and the construction of this building begun only
during the second half of the century, and it was opened to the believers around 1298. The front was
probably built at the beginning of XIVth century, and it is very interesting because of the ornamental
solutions. The impression is due to the contrast between the bricks and the white stone.
san PriMo. The Romanesque church was built at the second half of the XIIth century. It was
managed by a collegiate of priests that, in 1354, became part of the Congregation of the Servite Order,
that managed the church until the end of the XVIIIth century. In ancient times the church had the
same structure of the church of S. Teodoro: one nave and two aisles, dome cladding, a dome and fake
