times he was extensively worshipped in the east and the West. He shared
with his contemporaries Cosmas and Damian, the name of “unmercenary
saint CharLes, saint Patron of the City Carlo Borromeo (1538-1584) is among
the greatest bishops in the history of the Church: a charitable person, a master of doctrine and a
champion of apostle life, he is remembered mostly for his mercy and devotion. He used the family
riches in favour of the poor; he brought order to the ecclesial structure, defending it from the
interference of the local powerful. Because of such a bald endeavour he was the victim of a failed
assassination. During the 1576 plague he personally attended to the sick. He backed the birth of
institutes and foundations and devoted his entire life to the Episcopal ministry, under the guidance
of his motto: «Humilitas». He was beatified in 1602 and canonised on November 1, 1610 by
Pope Paul V (Camillo Borghese); his celebration takes place on November 4, the day of his death.
