Fu proprio
sanCtuary of the hoLy virGin of GraCes. In 1599,
bishop Lodovico Taverna had built in this area a religious site, which
was later demolished in 1655 as a consequence of the urban development
of the city; however, popular devotion towards a sacred image of the
Virgin Mary which was kept here and was believed to be miraculous
accelerated the building of a new church. The works began in 1669
and were finished in 1743 This building, which is dedicated to the
Holy Virgin of Graces, was consecrated in 1674.
sanCtuary of the hoLy virGin “inCoronata” (CiviC
teMPLe). The sanctuary was built in 1488 basing on a project by
Giovanni Battagio and it is the most prestigious and renown monument
of the city. The church occupies the area of a former brothel where was
painted the image of a Madonna. According to the tradition, after some
miracle which took place in 1487, the ecclesiastical authorities and
the citizens asked for the building of the church as a commemoration
of these facts. The project of architect Battagio was that of a building
with an octagonal plant and radial chapels separated by pilasters, two
aisles and a porch; it represents a unicum in the Lombard environment
of that time. The octagonal plant is rich in both historical and
doctrinal implications; it links the architectural research of Bramante
in Saint Satiro (choir and sacristy) to the complex ideology linked to
the worship of the Madonna.
ChurCh of PeaCe. This Church was built as a mark of gratitude
for the gift of peace which was obtained after a miraculous event that
took place during the time of fights between Guelphs and Ghibellines. It
santuario Beata verGine addolorata.
heard from a fresco portraying the Madonna with child an extraordinary voice pleading for peace for
three times. For this reason, in 1516 the decision was made to build a sanctuary to honour the Virgin
Mary of Peace.Worthy of mention is, inside the church, the Nativity by Martino Piazza (1525).
CatheDraL of the virGin Mary of the assuMPtion.
This cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and it is
one of the largest in Lombardy. It is in Romanic-style. Its building started
in 1160 and was completely restored between 1958 and 1965. The interior
has three aisles. In the lateral chapels can be admired remarkable frescoes,
some of which are dedicated to the Virgin Mary; in the second altar on the
right, there is a statue of the Pilgrim Madonna, which was crowned in 1949
by Milan archbishop Beato Ildefonso Schuster.
first decades of the 17 th century, the fame of some miraculous events that
sanctuary was built from the will of Father Luigi Savaré and was opened
and was opened in 1924 with a new statue dedicated to Mary Help of Christians coming from Turin
and followed by a procession of several people. Amongst the Marian services celebrated here, the most
important is that of the Sanctuary of the Holy Virgin Help of Christians on 24 th May, which consists
of an important procession chaired by the bishop.
sanCtuary of our LaDy of sorrow. The sanctuary is about two kilometres away from
