Nicolas
O do not taste!
O do not feed
On sin! But haste
To save three souls in need!
The mother's cry
Is sad and weak.
Within these walls they lie
Whom mothers sadly seek.
Timothy, Mark and John,
Put your fleshy garments on!
Come from dark oblivion! …
Travellers
See! Three boys spring back to life,
Who, slaughtered by the butcher's knife,
Lay salted down! ‐ and entering,
Hand‐in‐hand they stand and sing
ALLELUIA! To their King!
Three small boys (Entering)
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
All
Alleluia!
8. His Piety and Marvellous Works
Chorus
For forty years our Nicolas
Our Prince of men, our shepherd and
Our gentle guide, walked by our side.
We turned to him at birth and death,
In time of famine and distress,
In all our grief, to bring relief.
He led us from the valleys to
The pleasant hills of grace. He fought
To fold us in from mortal sin.
O! He was prodigal of love!
A spendthrift in devotion to
Us all – and blessed as he caressed.
We keep his memory alive
In legends that our children and
Their children's children treasure still.
Semi‐Choruses*
A captive at the heathen court
wept sorely all alone.
‘O Nicolas is here, my son!
And he will bring you home!’
[Lancing]
Nicola
Oh, non assaggiate!
Oh, non nutritevi del peccato!
Ma affrettatevi a salvare
Tre anime bisognose!
Il pianto delle madri
È triste e debole.
Giacciono tra queste mura
Coloro che le madri cercano con tanto affanno.
Timothy, Mark e John,
Indossate le vostre vesti di carne!
Venite dall'oscuro oblio!
Viaggiatori
Guardate! Ritornano in vita tre fanciulli
Che, massacrati dal coltello del macellaio,
Giacevano in salamoia!
Ci siamo rivolti a lui in nascita e in morte,
In tempo di carestia e angoscia,
In tutto il nostro cordoglio, affinché ci portasse sollievo.
Ci ha condotti fuori dalle vallate,
Verso le gradite colline della Grazia.
Ha combattuto per allontanarci dal peccato mortale.
Oh, egli era generoso d'amore!
Si prodigò in dedizione per tutti noi,
E benediva mentre accarezzava.
Teniamo viva la sua memoria,
Nelle leggende che i nostri figli,
E i figli dei loro figli custodiranno ancora.
Semi‐Cori*
Un prigioniero nel tribunale pagano
Piangeva disperatamente, tutto solo.
‘Nicola è qui, figlio mio!
Ti porterà a casa!’
[Lancing]
