2024-02 SUSTAINABLE BUS
In this issue, all the figures on the European e-bus market 2023 (hint: over 40 of the new city buses were electric!), a reporting on #battery manufacturing plans underway in Hungary and their impact on the European #electricbus landscape, a focus on powertrain values and strategies in the realm of e-mobility. Plus, a piece on the challenges faced by #BEV bus adoption in Germany (yes, it's also a matter of TCO).

OUTLOOKS
42 percent of city buses
were zero-emission (BEV
and hydrogen), growing
3-fold compared to 15
percent in 2020. And
2023 was also a recordbreaking
year for fuel cell
bus deliveries, as many as
207, growing 111 percent
on 2022 and 32 percent on
former record-year 2021.
In 2023, 13,466 buses featuring
alternative drivelines
were registered. This
represents a substantial 41
percent increase compared
to the previous year,
primarily fueled by the
growing volume of electric
and hybrid buses.
THE SLOW GROWTH
OF HYDROGEN BUSES
The year 2023 saw a notable increase
in the adoption of hydrogen-powered
buses in Europe, with
a total of 207 registrations—more
than double the previous year’s
count of 99 in 2022, and surpassing
the previous record of 158 set
in 2021. Solaris led the pack with
77 registrations, followed by Van
Hool and Caetano with 34 each. Behind:
Alexander Dennis (20 units),
the Polish Neso Bus with 20 vehicles
delivered as well, Wrightbus
with 15 H2 buses and, finally, the
first 7 eCitaro fuel cell registered in
the region.
A fleet of 577 hydrogen buses (considering
only those delivered from
2012 on) was operational as of
January 1st 2024. Solaris claimed
the top position with 181 buses,
followed by Van Hool with 140, and
Wrightbus with 97.
ELECTRIC BUS MARKET 2023. AND THE WINNER IS...
IT’S RAINING EV
Plot twist in the European e-bus market. MAN
took the lead last year growing over 3-fold. Over
6,000 battery-electric buses were registered,
growing 53 percent on 2022
In recent years, the European bus
market has undergone a paradigm
transformation, and it’s not a figure
of speech. Who would have
thought, just a few years ago, that almost
one out of two urban buses sold in
Europe could be powered by batteries?
But this is precisely what has already
happened, and figures from consulting
Chatrou CME Solutions on alternative
drive bus registrations are a testament
of such development.
Absolute volume of battery-electric bus
registrations grew from 4,152 in 2022
to 6,354 in 2023 in EU27, UK, Iceland,
Norway, and Switzerland: a 53 percent
growth. 42 percent of city buses were zero-emission
(BEV and hydrogen), growing
3-fold compared to 15 percent in
2020. And 2023 was also a record-breaking
year for fuel cell bus deliveries
(as many as 207, growing 111 percent
on 2022 and 32 percent on former record-year
2021. More info in the box).
In 2023, 13,466 buses featuring alternative
drivelines were registered. This
represents a substantial 41 percent increase
compared to the previous year,
primarily fueled by the growing volume
of electric and hybrid buses.
Three alternative buses every four
Every four city buses registered in Europe,
three are now ‘alternatively’-fueled
(it was 62 percent in 2022 and 52
in 2020).
The shortlist of market leaders in the
e-bus segment has just witness a plot
twist, with MAN taking the lead of the
Based on Chatrou - CME Solutions data on battery-electric bus registrations (excluding trolley buses) above 8 ton.
market thanks to 785 Lion’s City E registered
in the continent, over three times
the 2022’s figure of 230. The Lion is
followed by Solaris (725, doubling the
previous year), Yutong (483) and the
other surprise: Wrightbus (469 units,
thanks to a striking +318 percent).
However, looking at the ‘pie’ of zero
emission bus providers and thus including
fuel cell powered vehicles, Solaris
keeps the lead with 802 vehicles.
Looking at the wider 12-years period
surveyed by Chatrou CME Solutions,
as many as 19,000 e-buses have been
registered, with Polish Solaris still at
