Seneca
Seneca considers the transitory grandeur of the world.
Seneca
The royal and imperial purple
of sharp thorns and tribulations is composed;
beneath their raiment
are the torments of unhappy princes:
their splendid crowns
only serve to adorn their sufferings.
The greatness of royalty
is but borrowed pomp and splendour,
but the pain remains always invisible.
Pallas Athena, Seneca
From the heavens Pallas Athena foretells the death of Seneca,
promising him that when the time comes for him to die she will
inform him through the mouth of Mercury. This she will do because
he is a man of virtue and very dear to her.
She is fervently thanked by Seneca.
Pallas
Seneca, I see ill-omened auguries in heaven
that threaten you with total destruction;
if today I should see your life’s end,
you shall have more certain warning from Mercury.
Seneca
So let death come; constant and strong
I shall withstand misfortune and fear ;
after the passing of days of darkness,
death is an infinitely dawning day.
