Slovakian “Mr. Euro”: Latvia will enjoy<br />

the benefits of the Euro<br />

Interview with Igor Barat, Special Repr<strong>es</strong>entative<br />

of the Government of Slovakia of Euro issu<strong>es</strong><br />

Igor Barat was the special repr<strong>es</strong>entative of the Government of Slovakia<br />

on Euro issu<strong>es</strong> during 2007–2009. Barat coordinated the entire proc<strong>es</strong>s<br />

and reported regularly to the state cabinet. He is currently a member of<br />

the supervisory board of the Po tová commercial Bank. Barat was also<br />

ready to admit to some unfortunate events that happened during Slovakia's<br />

transition, and recalled how the European institutions put strong pr<strong>es</strong>sure<br />

on Slovakia.<br />

Based on your experience what would you recommend to Latvia?<br />

I am not familiar with all the details of your preparations, but as a general<br />

recommendation I would say that the preparations should be accelerated<br />

as soon as possible, because most of the transition procedur<strong>es</strong> require a long<br />

preparation time. Extreme details need to be taken care of.<br />

A good information campaign for citizens and small busin<strong>es</strong>s<strong>es</strong> is more<br />

than <strong>es</strong>sential. Slovakia began its campaign 16 months before €-day, and in<br />

my opinion one year before is the minimum time. A year and a half is even<br />

more recommended for people to fully understand what is to be expected.<br />

Well informed people will contribute to a smooth changeover.<br />

proc<strong>es</strong>s of programming, implementation and training for work with the
