and running the skin. Especially in unusually stressful situations, the skin is one of its inescapable victims. In several seconds, the autonomous nervous system creates a dramatic hormonal and mechanical succession leading to the recruitment of the available blood to those places which enable us to save our skin. The skin is literally tornicated and sucked dry. We turn pale; our hairs stand on end, and our palms and feet soles start sweating mercilessly. The skin betrays our deepest fears. Itching Humans are strongly visually oriented, as are other primates. Turning red when sexually ripe is more evident in other apes than in humans. The bottoms of females swell and turn rosy-red as a sign that they are open to receiving the male seed. However, this does not mean that humans are necessarily able to hide their sexual arousal either. As if they had caught fire, neck and breasts glow red, sometimes only at the thought of the skin of a stranger. But that is acceptable; the skin is our largest sexual organ. Our skin is our centre of feeling, not our heart as we have been led to believe. The thought of sex, alone makes the skin tintle and itch. but evaporates without obstruction in the open air. Evaporation provides cooling; sweating is a ventilation system spanning our entire surface. This was something we needed, as compared to the other animals on Earth our brains grew incredibly in volume in that two million years of evolution. Now we have the largest brains on Earth – in relation to our bodies, that is. And this is useful for thinking and doing human things, but not good with regards to overheating. The temperature of the brain is directly related to the temperature of our blood. Only a body sweating fully when necessary, offers sufficient ventilation channels to keep our enormous heads somewhat cool. We are one of the few mammals that go through life practically hairless. Many hypotheses have tried to explain why we are hairless in relation to other primates. Was primitive man an ape that spent most of its time in the sea? Not having hair in water environments is beneficial if you would need to swim a fair amount. Hair makes things heavier and needs to be kept well oiled in order not to absorb any water. The chance that we were a type of swimming ape is small as there are no fossil remains that would suggest any of this – no sign of an immune system that has survived a spectrum of attacks from water parasites. What can be more naked than a nude, red-haired adolescent with freckles in full light? Are we naked because we decided to start wearing clothes at some point? Or did we wear clothes because we were so naked? Did we become naked due to hygiene reasons because there were so many parasites in our hairs and we decided that it would be easier to wash the parasites out of our clothes than out of our hair? Probably not, because we were naked before we started making artefacts. The only plausible cause for our nakedness is that it made us able to sweat more efficiently. Ferdinand von Hebra Atlas der Hautkrankheiten > pagina VII Sissel Tolaas Installation Fear > pagina XI OVER / OP / IN / VOORBIJ DE HUID Kunstenaars Ferdinand von Hebra (1816-1880), grondlegger van de Weense school, is één van de belangrijkste personen in de geschiedenis van de dermatologie. Hij reisde vele huidziekten achterna, zo deed hij onder andere Noorwegen aan om lepra te bestuderen. Vanaf 1856 begon hij zijn monumentale Atlas der Hautkrankheiten te publiceren, samen met Karl Heitzmann en de schilderende dokter Anton Elfingen. Deze laatste verzorgde de iconografische weergave. Wat vooral opvalt aan de illustraties is de bijna poëtische manier waarop de meest verschrikkelijke huidziekten worden afgebeeld, zij staan in schril contrast met de klinische detailfoto’s die wij nu kennen. Ziekten op de huid worden zo bijna tot sieraad van het lichaam, als een kwetsbaar zilveren ketting om een vrouwenhals of als zorgvuldig gevlochten haar. Pijnlijk menselijk. Ferdinand von Hebra (1816-1880), one of the founders of the Vienna School, is one of the most important people in the history of dermatology. He travelled to see many skin diseases, going to Norway to study leprosy, for instance. He started publishing his monumental ‘Atlas der Hautkrankheiten’ in 1865 with Karl Heitzmann and the painter-doctor Anton Elfingen, who provided the iconographical representation. What is most noticeable in these illustrations is the almost poetic manner in which the most horrendous skin diseases are shown, in sharp contrast to the clinically detailed photographs we are familiar with nowadays. Skin diseases are almost transformed into an adornment of the body, like a fine silver necklace round a woman’s neck or carefully pleated hair, humanly painful. Since 1990 werkt ze aan ‘geur – de geur & communicatie” in verschillende vakgebieden zoals wiskunde, scheikunde, taalkunde en kunst. Ze is sinds 1987 gevestigd in Berlijn, waar zij in 2004 haar laboratorium voor geur en communi catie heeft opgericht: IFF re-searchLab Berlin, ondersteund door het IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances Inc., New York). Ze is sinds oktober 2006 als onderzoeker verbonden aan de Harvard Business School met als onderwerp onzichtbare communicatie en retorica. Sissel Tolaas (1961) is a traveller: she grew up in Iceland and Norway, studied in Oslo, Warsaw, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Oxford and Princeton. Since 1990 she has been working on the topic of ‘smell – smell & language communication’ within different sciences such as mathematics, chemistry, linguistics and arts. Based in Berlin since 1987, she established the research lab for smell and communication: IFF re-seachLab Berlin, supported by IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances Inc., New York) in 2004. Sissel was appointed researcher at Harvard Business School on Invisible Communication & Rhetoric in October 2006.
