Season <strong>2009</strong> <strong>2010</strong>WelcomeThe season <strong>2009</strong>-<strong>2010</strong> of <strong>De</strong> <strong>Nederlandse</strong><strong>Opera</strong> (DNO) promises to be oneof the most ambitious, in scope and output,of the last twenty years. Featuringno less than fifteen operas, it offers ouraudience an unprecedented journeythrough four hundred years of operatichistory.This season is also the first in whichthe programme of Het Muziektheateris linked to the artistic programming ofthe two producing companies of HetMuziektheater: <strong>De</strong> <strong>Nederlandse</strong> <strong>Opera</strong>and Het Nationale Ballet. This meansthat the two operatic guest performancesEmilie and Altre Stelle areincluded in this brochure and the DNOsubscription series as an integral partof the operatic programming.Chronologically speaking, the fourcenturies covered by the programmedivide the season into four groups ofproductions:The 17th and 18th century:a classic, Dido and Aeneas by HenryPurcell (<strong>2009</strong> is being celebrated roundthe world as Purcell year), in a productionby <strong>De</strong>borah Warner in her DNOdebut; and a rarity, Don Chisciotte inSierra Morena by Francesco BartolomeoConti, directed by Stephen Lawless.Both productions are presented in theStads schouwburg Amsterdam with,respectively, Les Arts Florissants conductedby William Christie (in his longoverdueoperatic debut in the Netherlands)and the Akademie für Alte MusikBerlin conducted by René Jacobs.Don Chischiotte is a co-production withthe <strong>2010</strong> Holland Festival. The third titleis Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. Therevival of Jossi Wieler’s and SergioMorabito's production is conducted byConstantinos Carydis.The 19th century is dominated by Frenchopera. Halévy’s masterpiece La Juive, apowerful grand opéra about religiousintolerance, opens the season. It is a coproductionwith the Paris Opéra where itplayed to full houses with great successin 2007. In Amsterdam it is conducted byCarlo Rizzi. La Juive’s production team,Pierre Audi and George Tsypin, are alsoresponsible for the revival of Berlioz’sepic opera Les Troyens later in theseason, conducted by Berlioz-specialistJohn Nelson. Les Troyens shows thestory of Dido and Aeneas, presented atthe beginning of the season, from a differentpoint of view. Donizetti’s L’elisird’amore returns for two series of performances– in the autumn of <strong>2009</strong> andthe summer of <strong>2010</strong> – conducted byRiccardo Frizza, who makes his debutwith DNO.The guest production of Altre Stellestarring Anna Caterina Antonacci is afascinating montage of death scenesfrom heroines in works by Berlioz,Cherubini, Gluck and others. This production,directed by Juliette <strong>De</strong>schampswith the period orchestra Les Sièclesconducted by François-Xavier Roth,perfectly fits in the context withLes Troyens. Finally, Richard Wagner’s<strong>De</strong>r fliegende Holländer receives a newproduction conducted by HartmutHaenchen and directed by Martin Kuš ej,55
