Bombardement op Rotterdam
en de gevolgen voor Overschie
Annexatie
Bij besluit van de Secretaris-Generaal van Binnenlandse Zaken wordt op 25 juli 1941
bepaald dat de gemeente Overschie per 1 augustus 1941 bij de Gemeente Rotterdam
gevoegd wordt. Er komt daarmee een einde aan de zelfstandige gemeente Overschie.
Het voormalige boeren- en forensendorp wordt onderdeel van Rotterdam. Vanuit de
gemeente Rotterdam waren al voor de oorlog grootschalige bouwplannen ontwikkeld
voor de polders in Overschie. De annexatie maakt ook de weg vrij voor de naoorlogse
ontwikkeling tot stadswijk en de explosieve groei van Overschie als gevolg van de
wederopbouw.
Bombing of Rotterdam and the
consequences for Overschie
The bombing of Rotterdam on May 14 th caused the surrender of the Dutch army and also ended
the fighting in and around Overschie. Overschie and its inhabitants were therefore spared further
suffering. German occupation of Overschie was a fact.
Consequences for Overschie
The consequences of the occupation were drastic. While the citizens first waited anxiously what the
German regime would mean for everyday life and were forced to adapt, the resistance was already
stirring in 1940 and 1941 and the first arrests took place. More and more Overschieënaars joined
the various resistance organizations. At the same time, the residents of Overschie also had very
different, daily concerns.
Emergency Village Build
The bombing of Rotterdam on May 14th, 1940 destroyed thousands of houses. In the Autumn of
1940, Overschie granted permission to build 200 “semi-permanent” homes in the polder, which still
remain there today.
Annexation
The Municipality of Overschie was added to the Municipality of Rotterdam as from August 1st,
1941. This put an end to the independent Municipality of Overschie.
