Omega-3. Their food ingredient applications <strong>for</strong> products made from the Powderloc<br />

technol<strong>og</strong>y include but not limited to; baked goods, milk, y<strong>og</strong>urt, juice, nutrition<br />

bars, and confectionary products.<br />

In 2005 Ocean Nutrition purchased an existing facility in Wisconsin in response to<br />

increased demand <strong>for</strong> Meg3® products. In 2007, Alicorp S.S.A of Peru and Ocean<br />

Nutrition <strong>for</strong>med a joint venture that will double output of ONC’s MEG-3® products.<br />

This new manufacturing facility is predicted to increase production capacity of<br />

standard 18:12 fish oil by 200%. ONC’s sales are reported to be in excess of $100<br />

million.<br />

Key Distribution/Business Relationships:<br />

In 2006, 15 different types of food products utilized MEG-3®. Some examples of food<br />

products containing MEG-3® include Danone y<strong>og</strong>urt, Tropicana Orange Juice,<br />

Gerber baby foods, Unilever’s Becel® Margarine Spread, Stoneyfield Farms’ Y<strong>og</strong>urt<br />

and Wegmans (a national grocery chain) bread. They also have exclusive/co<br />

branding relationships with supplement companies such as Natrol, and Dr. Andrew<br />

Weil.<br />

Neptune Technol<strong>og</strong>ies and Bioresources, Quebec, Canada<br />

Neptune Technol<strong>og</strong>ies and Bioresources is another major player from Canada.<br />

Neptune Technol<strong>og</strong>ies uses krill as its non-fish source of omega-3 fatty acids using a<br />

patented method of extracting the oils from krill. Their trademarked product is<br />

Neptune Krill Oil (NKO). According to Natural Products Insider, Neptune has a<br />

meaningful advantage to traditional fish oils given the presence of a phospholipid<br />

attached to its omega-3s. These proprietary phospholipids, phosphatidylcholine<br />

(PC), phosphatidylethanoamine (PE) and phosphatidylinositol (PI) are unique<br />

phospholipids which are carriers of EPA and DHA. NutraIngredients reported that<br />

their sales in 2006 were 7.3 million (Canadian dollars).<br />

Key Distribution/Business Relationships:<br />

In 2005, Neptune <strong>for</strong>med an allegiance with Degussa AG <strong>for</strong> furthering R&D and<br />

business developments <strong>for</strong> the krill-derived products. In 2007, Neptune also entered<br />

into a distribution agreement with Schiff Nutrition International, Inc. <strong>for</strong> the distribution<br />

of Neptune Krill Oil under the brand name Schiff® MegaRed. Schiff® MegaRed<br />

is expected to become available in the consumer mass market in the United States<br />

with an initial product launch through Costco planned <strong>for</strong> January 2008. In July 2007,<br />

Neptune and Nestlé joined <strong>for</strong>ces in a collaboration to jointly research the effects of<br />

NKO on exceptionally prevalent conditions affecting the worldwide adult<br />

population. Also in 2007, Neptune signed an agreement with Yoplait International to<br />

research and develops new functional fresh dairy products <strong>for</strong> worldwide<br />

commercialization.<br />

Martek Biosciences, Columbia, MD<br />

Although Martek produces omega-3 fatty acids from algae rather than marine<br />

sources, it is the only vegetarian source of DHA and there<strong>for</strong>e a major player in the<br />

omega-3 market, especially in the functional foods arena. Martek produces DHA<br />

from a source of algae naturally rich in DHA. Their trademarked product is called<br />
