Nordic Naturals, Watsonville, CA<br />
A Norwegian company, Nordic Naturals is one of the strongest retail names in the<br />
Omega-3 market, especially <strong>for</strong> children’s products. Nordic Naturals produces<br />
omega-3 oils exclusively from three fish species low on the food chain but naturally<br />
high in Omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA: Arctic Cod, Anchovies, and Sardines.<br />
They produce over 20 retail <strong>for</strong>mulations, all third party tested <strong>for</strong> purity. They also<br />
sell to the pet food industry.<br />
Nutrition 21, Purchase, NY<br />
Nutrition 21 is a retail dietary supplement company with clinically-tested, patented or<br />
proprietary <strong>for</strong>mulas. In 2006, Nutrition 21 purchased Iceland Health who has<br />
exclusive US rights to market and sell fish oil manufactured by an Icelandic company<br />
to pharmaceutical standards, which require low contaminant levels. They utilize a<br />
patented distillation process to remove contaminants such as dioxins. Iceland Health<br />
and Nutrition 21 traditionally sell their products through direct response channels but<br />
are both expanding into retail distribution.<br />
Pizzey’s Nutritional, Angusville, Manitoba, Canada<br />
Pizzey’s Nutritional is a subsidiary of Pizzey’s Milling, a major supplier of flaxseedbased<br />
ingredients including omega-3s. Pizzey’s Nutritional is attempting to bridge<br />
the gap between flax-sourced and fish-sources omegas with their MeadowPure Ultra<br />
3, a combination of ALA, DHA and EPA that is stable enough <strong>for</strong> incorporation into<br />
baked goods. The fish oil in MeadowPure Ultra 3 is encapsulated into the naturally<br />
stable flax seed itself. The company was recently purchased by Glandbia, PLC,<br />
Kilkenny, Ireland.<br />
The Wright Group, Crowley, LA<br />
The Wright Group is a large supplier of custom nutritional premixes <strong>for</strong> the<br />
supplement and food industries. In 2006, Puleva Biotech, Granada, Spain, a division<br />
of Ebro-Puleva and The Wright Group, announced a joint marketing and<br />
development partnership aimed at creating new products and markets <strong>for</strong> omega-3<br />
essential fatty acids based on Puleva Biotech's fish oils and Wright's <strong>for</strong>mulation and<br />
marketing expertise. Wright will create a new product line of stable fish oil powders<br />
with excellent taste and odor characteristics based on its proprietary SuperCoat®<br />
and SMART microencapsulation technol<strong>og</strong>ies. The products will be designed <strong>for</strong><br />
use in conventional <strong>for</strong>tified foods, functional foods and beverages and nutritional<br />
supplement applications. The Wright Group will be exclusively responsible <strong>for</strong> all<br />
sales and marketing activities <strong>for</strong> the partnership in the US and Canada.<br />
New Players in the Market<br />
Monsanto and The Solae Company, (both St. Louis MO)<br />
In March, 2007, Monsanta announced an agreement with The Solae Company to<br />
jointly develop and market omega-3 essential fatty acid products. Both companies<br />
had been independently working on researching soybeans containing high levels of<br />
omega-3s. Under terms of the agreement, the companies will collaborate in<br />
