diazepam and oxazepam.
Data from the NorPD show that 285 000
individuals had at least one prescription of an
anxiolytic dispensed in 2007, of which 65 %
were women.
Hypnotics and sedatives (ATC group
N05C)
The consumption of hypnotics has steadily
increased during the recent years. In 2007 the
consumption was 47 DDD/1000 inhabitants/
day.
In the 2007 statistics the consumption of
melatonin is also included, and the period
2003-2007 is updated. Melatonin deviates
from the other substances in this ATC group
regarding chemical structure and mode of
action. It is probably not associated with the
adverse reactions of the benzodiazepines. In
2007 the sales constituted 6 % of the total
sales of hypnotics measured in DDDs. Most
of the sales have been products without
Market Authorisation.
The highest consumption was observed in

structure from the benzodiazepines, but equal

constitute 36 DDD/1000 inhabitants/day, 77
