last month, there would be no trial. But sitting here, and watching the glimmer in my girl’s eyes, made it all worth it. And I hope, Megan
thought so too.
So many thoughts race through my head, I try to discard them, but like a hydra, if one is cut down, three more emerges. This is Megan’s
moment; I can’t let myself be distracted. I have never seen her this excited for anything ever, her eyes practically popping out from
behind their glassy containers. My brave…little…girl.
I feel a wave of exhaustion wash over me, instinctively my hand reaches for the water bottle. I heave for air, not noticing how heavy my
breathing is if it wasn’t for some parents on the row in front of us staring angrily at me, as if my fatigue is ruining their lives. Luckily,
Megan is too ecstatic to notice, and I gulp several ounces before it can flare up once more.
I just need to hold on a bit longer, the concert isn’t that long. If only I could afford some more comfort, then this entire ordeal would be a
breeze. But I am my mother’s child, born from unfortune into unfortune.
“Mommy, I think Isabella is next! It’s starting mommy, it’s starting!”
“Yes baby…it’s going to be wonderful. A moment we’ll never forget… right angel?”
Megan is too enthralled to reply, but I know she’ll never forget this. I’m a lousy mother, creating problems not memories. I wanted,
so badly, to be a great mother. To correct what was done wrong. But I know something. I brought into this wretched world the most
beautiful girl. She will fix it; she will make it a better place. She will… do what I can’t.
“Mommy! It’s starting!”
“Yes, baby, I’m listening, sing your song. I’m sure Isabella will love it.”
The sounds which previously engulfed me start to mesh into a beautiful symphony, the lights dazzling in radiant shimmers. I clench
Megan’s hand, desperately clinging on. I just want…a few more moments with her, please…please. I’m not ready.
“Do you love me baby?”
“I love you mommy. But are you okay mommy?”
She’s smiling.
She’s so beautiful.
Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise Megan.
You’re the most beautiful girl in this world.
And I love you.
