Abstract
This dissertation is the result of research done in the Vila União comunity, located
in the north of the Island of Santa Catarina (City of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina). The
main theme of this dissertation is the work with ceramics experienced by a small group of
people within this low income comunity and the changes instigated by such an experience
in their lives.
The first chapter tells the migrational history of low income people to Florianópolis.
The term dislocation is discussed theoreticaly, showing both the objective and the
subjective effects of this movement. The last part of this chapter tells the specific case of
the formation of the Vila União comunity and the impact caused by this dislocation on the
lives of the members of the comunity.
In the second chapter, the history of ceramics in Vila União is told throughout its
diferent phases: the inicial ceramics course; the abandonment of this course by public and
private authorities; the formation of the Vila União Ceramics Group; and the last group
project, a colective mural. This chapter also brings writings on the opening up of the critical
perception, the external influences on the criativity of the group and the strength of a
colective process.
The third chapter analizes the work with ceramics in Vila União showing how this
Art and Popular Education experience caused transformations in the lives of the people
involved. This chapter includes a theoretical discussion on criativity and imagination, Art
and Popular Education, and ends with the conection between ceramics and dislocation. This
dissertation instigates a wider discussion on Art and Popular Education and its possibilities
within an educational context.
