The Community Integration Nucleus project was born out of a partnership
established between FURNAS and the Brazilian Institute of Social
and Economic Analysis (IBASE) to promote the sustainable territorial
development of low-income communities, which are close to FURNAS’
facilities and enterprises. The project focuses on the active participation
of the local population as an essential component for their organization
and autonomy, formulating solutions to local problems, implementing
proposals for solving them, distributing responsibilities among the various
actors and monitoring the population with the public power and the
solutions that interfere in public policies.
Sandra Jouan, from Ibase, technical coordinator of the Nuclei, explains
that the proposal is to make feasible actions for the sustainable development
of communities around the FURNAS' enterprises, such as the
Angra dos Reis (RJ) substation and the Marechal Mascarenhas de Moraes
Hydroelectric Power Plant (MG). She states that "the participation of
local social actors is an option that qualifies the proposal and directly involves
the people of the territory in a process that leads to reflections,
propositions and actions of local development. The local actors are the
first to understand the proposal, to commit to it and to disclose it, in addition
to becoming agents of a democratic governance in the territory."
The Social Inclusion Program of Banco da Providência, carried out in
partnership with FURNAS, is another action worthy of mention. In 10
years of partnership, FURNAS invested approximately R$ 2 million in the
program, benefiting more than 3 thousand professionals with courses in
several areas. According to case-worker Cláudia Tenório, from Furnas'
Sociocultural Responsibility Management, in 2017 the rate of income
generation for the people served was 71%, which means "more than half
of the people who entered without perspective, without an employability,
started to have an increase in their family income. "
