The system pioneer
The Furnas Power Plant, in Minas Gerais, produces 1,216 MW
and is the most famous of the company's 21 hydroelectric
power plants, as it was the first one built and have the name
of the FURNAS System. The dam is located in the middle course of the
Grande River, in the section called waterfalls of furnas, between the cities
of São José da Barra and São João Batista do Glória, in the south of the
state. The Furnas Power Plant is part of the company's generating park,
which has 21 hydroelectric power plants, four of the company's own, six
under special management, two in partnership with the private sector
and nine under participation in Special Purpose Entities (SPEs). And also
two thermal power plants. These projects total more than 18 thousand
MW of installed capacity, of which Furnas holds approximately 12 thousand
MW.
In the area of the Furnas Power Plant there are important service areas,
such as the Hydrobiology and Pisciculture Station (currently undergoing
restructuring), which works on the creation of fish for the planned restocking
of reservoirs and on the conservation of the quality of the dammed
waters, serving all the power plants in the Furnas System.
There is also the Emergency Control Training Center. Known by its excellence,
the center occupies an area of 30,000 m², on the banks of the
Grande River. It organizes fire and panic trainings and is able to support
government agencies, such as the Fire Department, Forest Battalions
and companies of the electricity sector. This Center teaches the course
Theoretical and practical training in special clothing and autonomous air
masks (16 hours). Also the courses: Basic notions of fire fighting and use
of extinguishers (8 hours) and Training of Fire Brigades (40 hours). For
entertainment, there is the Furnas Cultural Cine, which occupies the old
cinema of the power plant, with capacity for 320 people and free shows
for the communities of the around the Furnas Power Plant, with erudite
and popular music shows, dance, as well as adult and children’s theater.
The dam of the Furnas Hydroelectric Power Plant has a maximum
height of 127 meters, with a total volume of 9,450,000 m³. Its reservoir
has a length of 220 km, a normal operating level of 768 m, a flooded
area of 1,440 km² and a total volume of 22.95 billion m³.
It is worth to mention also the Technical Center for Tests and Measurements,
an international reference in this segment, as shown below.
