Happy March 14th Medicine Day! 14 Mart Tıp Bayramı kutlu olsun! RECEP ARSLANTAŞ COORDINATOR recep.arslantas@img.com.tr During the reign of II. Mahmud, modern medical education began in Türkiye on March 4, 1827, with the suggestion of Chief Physician Mustafa Behçet. The first surgery center was established in the Tulumbacıbaşı Mansion in Şehzadebaşı under the names “Tıphanesi-i Amire” and “Serrahhanesi-i Amire”. This event is considered the day when modern medical education began in Türkiye, and on this occasion, March 14, the founding day of the school, began to be celebrated as “Medicine Day”. The first celebration of Medicine Day took place in occupied Istanbul in March 1919. Medical faculty students gathered to protest the occupation under the leadership of Hikmet Bora, and the famous doctors of the period also supported them. Between 1929 and 1937, May 12 was celebrated as Medicine Day. This date was celebrated as Medicine Day as it was considered the day when the first Turkish medical courses started at Bursa Yıldırım Hospital. Nowadays, it is celebrated not only on March 14, but also throughout the week including March 14, and this week is considered the “Medicine Holiday Week”. Similar celebrations are held on different dates in different parts of the world. While July 1, the birthday of the famous Doctor Bidhan Chandra Roy, is celebrated as “Doctors’ Day” in India, the anniversary of March 30, 1842, when general anesthesia was first used in surgeries, is celebrated in the USA. Mahmud döneminde 4 Mart 1827’de Hekimbaşı Mustafa Behçet’in önerisiyle Türkiye’de modern tıp eğitimi başladı. İlk cerrahhane, Şehzadebaşı’ndaki Tulumbacıbaşı Konağı’nda “Tıp hanesi-i Amire” ve “Cerrah hanesi-i Amire” adlarıyla kuruldu. Bu etkinlik, Türkiye’de modern tıp eğitiminin başladığı gün olarak kabul ediliyor ve bu vesileyle okulun kuruluş günü olan 14 Mart, “Tıp Bayramı” olarak kutlanmaya başlandı. Tıp Bayramı’nın ilk kutlaması işgal altındaki İstanbul’da Mart 1919’da gerçekleşti. Hikmet Bora’nın önderliğinde işgali protesto etmek için toplanan tıp fakültesi öğrencileri, dönemin ünlü doktorları da onlara destek verdi. 1929-1937 yılları arasında 12 Mayıs Tıp Bayramı olarak kutlandı. Bu tarih, Bursa Yıldırım Hastanesi’nde ilk Türkçe tıp kurslarının başladığı gün olarak kabul edildiğinden Tıp Bayramı olarak kutlandı. Günümüzde sadece 14 Mart günü değil, 14 Mart’ı da içeren hafta boyunca kutlanmakta ve bu hafta “Tıp Bayramı Haftası” olarak kabul edilmektedir. Benzer kutlamalar dünyanın farklı yerlerinde farklı tarihlerde yapılıyor. Ünlü Doktor Bidhan Chandra Roy’un doğum günü olan 1 Temmuz, Hindistan’da “Doktorlar Günü” olarak kutlanırken, ABD’de genel anestezinin ameliyatlarda ilk kez kullanıldığı 30 Mart 1842’nin yıl dönümü kutlanıyor.
