Despite the lack of dedicated
facilities and services, Middle East
and UAE are at present an interesting
market for the superyacht
industry. As per recent analyses and
researches (Mare Forum Abu Dhabi,
2017), “The Global Superyacht
Market (30m & Above) is driven by
212,000+ UHNWI’s globally, the
number of which increased by 61%
during 2005-2016. There are in the
world a total of 5000+ superyachts
in use, owned by less than 2.5%
of UHNWI’s. The global population
of UHNWIs is set to continue
expanding during 2015-2025, but at
a slower pace than the previous 10
years.
The total number of UHNWIs
is forecast to rise 41% to 263,500
by 2025 and in the Middle East the
number of UHNWI’s is expected to
grow 54% by 2025, third only to Asia
and Russia/CIS”. (Ref. Joe Walton,
Cayman Registry). According to the
same study, “25 of the largest 101
superyachts are owned by Nationals
of the Gulf Region representing the
highest per capita concentration in
any region globally”. According to the
Global Superyacht Order Book (April
2016), a total of 59 superyachts
were ordered in Middle East.
Based on interviews with charter
companies and maritime agencies
and operators, the UAE is increasingly
becoming a selected destination
on the superyacht cruising circuit
and offers an alternative wintering
homeport to the popular established
destinations, as Mediterranean and
Caribbean.
destination
become a new superyacht hub and
yachting destination.
To discuss this topic, P&O MARI-
NAS and FABMAR are excited to
announce the first edition of the
Dubai International Superyacht
Summit. The event will take place
from the 28th February – 1st March
2018 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The first edition's theme is ‘The
Emirati Riviera: A New World Hub
for Yachting’. On the first edition of
the Dubai International Superyacht
Summit, experts from the superyacht
industry from within the UAE
and further afield will discuss the
opportunities and challenges for the
emergence of the Emirati Riviera as
a yachting destination, and indeed
a superyacht hub, and winter destination.
The Dubai International
Superyacht Summit answers to the
increasing interest from the nautical
community - yacht owners, captains
and crews, marine authorities, marina
operators, yacht builders, shipyards
and maintenance operators, suppliers
of services and goods - to meet
and share knowledge, information,
challenges and to support each other's
interests.
Emirati overview and opportunity
In the last few years, the nautical
and marine industry in the United
Arab Emirates has experienced significant
growth, combined with the
fact that many marina projects have
been developed and are presently
under construction. Furthermore,
few important projects in the region
are now including more and more
berths for superyachts, which category
is increasing in the Middle East.
As a consequence, there is an
increasing interest from the nautical
community - boats and yacht
owners, captains and crews, marine
authorities, marina operators, boat
and yacht builders, shipyards and
maintenance operators, suppliers of
services and goods - to meet and
share knowledge, information, problems
and support each other’s business.
Although non-associated nautical
lobbies already exist in the Country
and, together with the marine
authorities and developers, have
contributed to the development of
the UAE maritime industry in the
last 15 years, a formal unification of
the nautical community under the
same organization and/or association
(EAMI - the Emirati Association
of Marine Industry) would make the
UAE nautical industry stronger, more
compact and would be of great benefit
for the reputation of the Country
in the wider community. Furthermore,
partnerships and collaborations with
the most reputable international
marine associations would support
the existent know-how and would
help in the development of the UAE
yachting industry and community, at
international level.
