n March 21, 2018, at the Westminster United Church
O on Maryland at 7:30 p.m., Manitoba Chamber Orchestra
Concert featured Canada’s premiere and
internationally recognized coloratura soprano/Order
of Canada recipient, Tracy Dahl and her former, now
“star” student (University of Manitoba), soprano,
Andriana Chuchman. The venue was acoustically
magnificent, the ambience of instruments and
both brilliant voices were electric.
Premiering together in Winnipeg as mentor/
student, the sold out performance featured
symphonies, duets and arias under the musical
direction of conductor, Anne Manson
and members of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra.
Selections performed included Airs
d’Espagne (Spanish Melodies), Mozart’s Symphony
No.17 in G Major,K. 129 and Haydn’s
Symphony No. 65 in A Major,HOB.I:65.
Notable were the beautiful and seasonally
appropriate Vivaldi’s Laudamus Te from Gloria
in D Major, K. 427 (We praise thee, Lord)
and Mozart’s Domine Deus from Mass in C
Minor,K.427 (this excerpt is a heartfelt prayer
to God and Jesus Christ).
On a lighter tone Mozart’s operatic version
Sull’aria from The Marriage of Figaro, K. 492 -
the sweet natured duet was modernized when
Andrian , while singing, casually pulled out a cell
phone and texted a love invitation to the Countess
Almaviva’s (Tracy) husband. The audience loved it.
Additionally, Ah! Guarda Sorella, Act I from Mozart’s
Cosi Fan Tutte K.588 was executed with subtle precision.
El Desdichado (The Unhappy One) arr. by Vivian
Fung rendered the audience to empathize with chagrin.
Further, Mozart’s lyrical duet Se Viver Non Degg’io from Mitridate,
King of Pontus, K. 87 commanded a standing ovation. The finale,
Debussy’s Chanson Espangole (Spanish Song) arr. by Vivian
Fung crowned the versatility of the agile runs, trills and leaps
of the powerful and unapologetic Dahl style: “with sunshine,
rainbows and laser light” (Opera Canada) and Chuchman’s
alluring and powerful style: “full, sure, glorious sound you
wanted to sink into.”(The Washington Post)
A mandatory encore was requested by the audience.
Chanson Espagnole times two left the attendees completely
satisfied. Many would agree, for as long as
both sopranos would sing the audience would listen.
We, who were present at Westminster United Church
proudly witnessed the professional excellence of both
performers who share the understood deep roots of
River City’s love of local talent.
In conversation with Ann Manson, Musical Director
of the Chamber Orchestra, she underscored the fact
that: “Winnipeg is an amazingly talented city.” On a
personal note, Fr. Don Lukie, stated that he “specifically
drove to Winnipeg from Yorkton to attend this
concert.”
Both sopranos graced our Winnipeg stage in classic elegance.
Their career parallels at the Metropolitan Opera,
New York City, stringent schedules on the opera and
symphony circuit, recitals and recording commitments
keep both talents busy interpreting with flare the multiple
roles and repertoires opera devotées love. Winnipeg
is still considered their home. УВ
