Facebook refutes report
'Zuckerberg doesn't care
about publishers'
San Francisco : Facebook has denied a
media report that cited one of its senior executives
as saying that Mark Zuckerberg doesn't
care about publishers. The Australian on
Monday reported that in a meeting with
Australian media executives,
Facebook's Head of News
Partnerships Campbell Brown
said: "Mark Zuckerberg doesn't
care about publishers but is giving
me a lot of leeway and concessions
to make these changes".
Brown reportedly said that publishers
who choose not to work
with Facebook will wind up in a
dying business. "Facebook said
the remarks were inaccurate and
taken out of context," Fortune
reported. The Australian claimed
the story was based on information
from five people present at the meeting with
Brown who requested anonymity.
Earlier in August, Facebook announced to
invest an additional $4.5 million towards helping
the publishing industry globally.
China protests against signing of US defence act
Beijing : China on Tuesday expressed
strong dissatisfaction with the US government
as it passed and signed a new defence
legislation that was seen as targeted at
Beijing. US President Donald Trump on
Monday signed the National Defence
Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year
2019 into law. The bill included clauses such
as directing a whole-of-government strategy
Sri Lanka to ink
agreement with
China's Alibaba
Colombo : The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau
(SLTPB) will ink an agreement with Alibaba's travel arm
Fliggy to bring 1,000 travellers weekly to the country in
order to expand its growing tourism
sector, Tourism Minister John
Amaratunga said on Tuesday.
Amaratunga said after obtaining
the necessary approval, his ministry
will sign a Memorandum of
Understanding with Alibaba next
week, Xinhua news agency reported.
Supreme Global Holdings
Limited, the local company that has
tied up with Alibaba, will work
closely with SLTPB on the project
implementation, which is expected
to result in a positive large-scale impact on Sri Lanka's
tourism.
Further, Supreme Global also intends to promote Alipay
actively in Sri Lanka upon receiving the necessary clearances
thus taking Sri Lanka Tourism to new heights, especially
among Chinese tourists, Amaratunga said.
The minister expressed confidence that Sri Lanka would
comfortably achieve the 2.5 million target set for this year,
while noting that the country could achieve 3.5 million
arrivals in 2019 provided the global tourism outlook remains
favourable. Over 1.3 million tourists arrived in Sri Lanka in
the first seven months of 2018, recording a 13.7 per cent
growth compared with the same period of last year.
The social media giant, that reported more
than $5 billion in profit in the second quarter
this year, said it will give $3.5 million towards
"Facebook Membership Accelerator", a threemonth
pilot programme designed to help publishers
with membership models.
"We are going to continue to
coach the group of metro news publishers
from the pilot programme
through the end of this year, and we
will reconvene with them in 2019 to
focus on subscriber retention,"
Brown said in a blog post.
Facebook also announced to contribute
$1 million to the 2018
"NewsMatch" campaign which
matches individual donations to
more than 100 non-profit newsrooms
around the country.
Facebook said it is also working
with publishers across the US and Europe to test
support for subscriptions in "Instant Articles".
"Moving forward, we'll also be exploring
ways to support emerging models like membership
directly on Facebook," said Brown.
Beijing urges Washington to abandon its
Cold War mentality and the concept of a
zero-sum game, and objectively view its
relations with China, Foreign Ministry
spokesperson Lu Kang was quoted as saying
by Xinhua news agency. "China has
NASA to send submarine to
seafloor next week : Report
Washington : NASA is
set to send a submarine to
the seafloor near Hawaii on
August 20 in an effort to
find an environment analogous
to water worlds like
Jupiter’s moon Europa and
Saturn’s moon Enceladus,
the media reported on
Tuesday.
Taking a closer look at
the Earth’s seafloor might
help the space agency to send a
submarine to the outer solar system
to explore the waters of
other worlds for life, the popularmechanics.com
reported.
On August 20, NASA will
send the submarine SUBSEA,
Biogeochemical Science and
Exploration Analog, to a volcanic
vent Loihi — a seamount
off the coast of the Big Island of
Hawaii.
At Loihi, the submarine it
will take observations at subcentimeter
Imran Khan
accepts King
Salman's invite
for Saudi visit
Islamabad : Pakistan Tehreek-e-
Insaf (PTI) chairman and Prime
Minister in-waiting Imran Khan has
accepted an invitation from Saudi
King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud
to visit the kingdom, it was
announced here
on Monday.
The Saudi
King felicitated
Khan for winning
the July 25
general elections
in
Pakistan and
expressed good
wishes for the new government.
According to a statement issued
by the PTI, King Salman told Khan
that the people of Pakistan had
reposed their confidence in him and
that Saudi Arabia seeks close ties
with his government.
In response, Khan thanked the
Saudi King and called Saudi Arabia
"a friend who has always supported
them in difficult times", the party
said. After accepting King Salman's
invite to visit Saudi Arabia, Imran
Khan also extended an invitation to
the former to visit Pakistan.
repeatedly made clear its position and
lodged solemn representations with the
US," he added.
Lu called on the US to adhere to the one-
China policy and the principle of the three
joint communiques, as well as not to implement
the negative China-related clauses to
avoid damaging relations and bilateral
cooperation in key areas.
22 killed as highway
bridge collapses in Italy
Rome : A section of a highway
bridge collapsed in the
Italian city of Genoa during
heavy rain on Tuesday, plummeting
vehicles up to 90 metres
to the ground and killing at least
22 people, officials said.
The vice minister for infrastructure,
Edoardo Rixi, said the
death toll was expected to rise,
while Transport Minister Danilo
Toninelli said it was likely to be
"an immense tragedy", the BBC
reported.
The 100-metre (328-feet),
two-lane section of the Morandi
bridge collapsed in the afternoon.
Firefighting crews were
searching alongside urban search
and rescue teams for people
trapped in their vehicles under
the rubble. The police linked the
disaster to what they called "a
violent cloudburst". According
to reports, the collapsed section
had mostly fallen on to rail
tracks below. The bridge stands
on the A10 toll motorway, which
serves the Italian Riviera and
southern coast of France.
upwelling volcanic material
meets the ocean water. Although
this dark, oxygen-poor environment
might seem like a harsh
place for life, organisms from
bacterial colonies to thermophilic
worms to heat-tolerant
crustaceans can thrive by these
volcanic vents, something scientists
once thought was impossible.
In space, it’s possible to find
little volcanic vents on the ocean
floor of Europa, which is larger
than Pluto, or Enceladus, which
is a small moon believed to have
a porous core of hot rock.
The rocky cores of these
worlds heat up due to gravitational
interactions with their
much larger home planets, possibly
producing volcanic
activity on the ocean
floor similar to Earth.
Both moons are prime
targets for future NASA
missions and eventual
ocean exploration.
“Everything that we
do has bearing on how
we think and how we
design these future missions,”
Darlene Lim,
principal investigator of SUB-
SEA and scientist at NASA, was
quoted as saying.
“We’re interested in developing
models to determine what we
might expect in Enceladus,” Lim
added.
The actual biological work
will take place mostly through
sample retrieval. The mission
will be divided between an onsite
team monitoring from the
ocean above and a collaboration
of laboratories across the US.
Currently, the submarine is
not testing out new instruments
but giving a dry rehearsal for
future missions that will use primarily
off-the-shelf technology,
the report said.
the missing section was dozens
of metres in length. It ran across
the span of the Polcevera stream.
Video footage appeared to show
one of the towers holding up the
suspension bridge collapsing in
stormy weather.
"It was just after 11.30 when
we saw lightning strike the
bridge," eyewitness Pietro M
all'Asa was quoted as saying by
Italy's Ansa news agency. "And
we saw the bridge going down."
Traffic was queuing on the
bridge at the time, another eyewitness
told Italian public television.
One image posted by the
regional emergency services
showed a truck perched at the
end of the surviving bridge section
immediately before the
drop. French President
Emmanuel Macron tweeted a
message of sympathy to the people
of Italy and said he was
ready to offer any necessary aid.
Local media estimated that
around 10 vehicles could be
trapped in the rubble.
Religion does
not teach animosity:
Kejriwal
New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister
Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday
reminded people on the occasion of
Independence Day that no religion
teaches animosity. As he and his
deputy greeted the people on the
occasion, Manish Sisodia told them
to aspire for freedom
from the
shackles of caste,
religion and narrow
outlook.
Sharing a couplet
from Urdu
poet Muhammad
Iqbal's patriotic
song "Sare Jahan
Se Accha",
Kejriwal wished
that there be all around development
in the country and peace should prevail."Religion
does not teach us animosity...
We are of Hind, our homeland
is Hindustan," he tweeted.
Sisodia said only political freedom
does not make a country free.
"Let's remind ourselves on the
occasion that a free country is not
made up of only political freedom.
Freedom from the struggles over
caste and religion, and narrow outlook
towards women ensures that a
country is truly free," he said.
