Supported by:AREASOFEMPHASISGUIDELINES FOR COACHESEXECUTIVE SUMMARYIntroductionBritish Basketball’s Game On strategy isthe current guide to the immediate future ofbasketball in Britain.A key group within the strategy, thePerformance Management Group (PMG)has been established and set aboutconsulting amongst the home nations andinternationally to improve basketball’sperformance. Additionally, a CurriculumDriver Group (CDG) was also formed.Both groups have consulted widely inorder to work towards a curriculum forbasketball in Britain.The consultation has involved world classcoaching experts who have experience inboth curriculum development in elite sportand basketball and an expertunderstanding of player development.While the writing of a curriculum involves acomplex consultative and collaborativeapproach, the need is not simply for awritten document but also for an effectiveimplementation. A comprehensiveimplementation through acceptance ofthese guidelines is most important forgrowth and progress in British basketball’splaying and coaching standards. TheAreas of Emphasis: Guidelines forCoaching is the first step in refocusingand co-ordinating basketball coachingin Britain.It is only a part of the greater solution tobetter and more effective teaching andcoaching in the UK. Combined with theestablishment of a wider base of playerdevelopment programs focused onteaching the basic skills and concepts, itwill springboard British basketball tohigher standards of player developmentand performance.These Areas of Emphasis are the “what isimportant now” for basketball in thiscountry. They are the immediate focus forcoaching, teaching and development ofBritish players for the future.While there will be discussion, debate andfurther clarification of these areas ofemphasis, there is no doubt that theseguidelines are most important for our Britishplayers’ future. At present the majority ofour players have not been prepared anddeveloped to their full potential within theUK. This is a point with which everybasketball coach at any level in Britainshould be most concerned. Through theseguidelines and other British Basketballcurriculum documents we have a greatopportunity to improve playing standardsat club, school and national level.1
Executive SummaryAREASOFEMPHASISGUIDELINES FOR COACHESWhile our coaching efforts have beenhonourable, with good intent, they nowneed a sharper focus and more analysis.If we are successful the quality of bothour players and our competitions willimprove. Consequently our club, regionaland national teams will all benefit. Wecould also set a collective and nationalgoal of being a major basketball countryin Europe.Each and every coach must reflect on theircoaching and set about improving theirown teaching and coaching effort at alllevels. If our players’ learning is improvedwe will have all done our job well. Let’s getstarted by using these guidelines tokick start our new teaching and coachingfocus for the British game. We have a lot ofwork to do as part of British Basketball’sTowards 2016 strategy and now the T20and Beyond. Improved attention todevelopment of our players through bettercoaching lies ahead.
