7. Importance of the course and how it fits into the curriculum:
7.1 Introduction to the subject
7.2. Objectives of the subject
1. Design digital communication systems, given constraints on data rate, bandwidth,
power, fidelity, and complexity.
2. Analyze the performance of a digital communication link when additive noise is
present in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio and bit error rate.
3. Compute the power and bandwidth requirements of modern communication systems,
including those employing ASK, PSK, FSK, and QAM modulation formats.
4. To provide the students a basic understanding of the Telecommunications.
5. To develop technical expertise in various modulation techniques.
6. Provide basic understanding of information theory and error correction codes.
7.3. Outcomes of the subject

Ability to understand the functions of the various parts, analyze theoretically the
performance of a modern communication system.
Ability to compare analog and digital communications in terms of noise, attenuation,
and distortion.
Ability to recognize the concepts of digital baseband transmission, optimum reception
analysis and band limited transmission.
