Summertime is Music Time – Music Festivals in Europe<br />
It’s summer, exams lie behind us and what better way to spend your time than going to a music festival?<br />
Everybody knows Roskilde, so I don’t need to tell you about that. What about the rest of Europe though?<br />
What kind of music festivals do places like Poland, Austria, England or Portugal offer? This article wants to<br />
investigate that and give you some insights and useful information on how to get there and how much you<br />

the end of June, Glastonbury Festival is the place<br />
to be. With 45 stages and around 177.000 visitors<br />
it is one of the biggest open-air music festivals<br />
worldwide. First held in the 1970s, it has its roots<br />
in the hippie-era and is by some referred to as the<br />
“English Woodstock”. When farmer Michael Eavis<br />
founded the festival on a farm in the Southwest<br />
of England near Pilton, the ticket cost 1 pound –<br />
fresh milk from the farm included. The location<br />
hasn’t changed, though the festival has grown<br />

be the organiser of the festival, but shares that<br />
task with other associations such as Greenpeace<br />
nowadays. Apart from his share, Eavis donates<br />
the profits to charity. The festival derives its name<br />
from the city of Glastonbury, which lies nearby<br />
and is surrounded by myths – some claim that<br />
Glastonbury is identical with Avalon, a mythical<br />
place known from the Arthurian legend.<br />
