INDEFINITE ARTICLE.<br />

21. The indefinite article is derived from the<br />

numeral en, from which it differs in not taking stress.<br />

It is evident that this article can only be used in the<br />

singular; its place in the plural may be filled by the<br />

indefinite pronoun no gen: Her er en mand (nogen<br />

mcznd) som ml tale med dig. It is also evident that the<br />

indefinite article can only be used with the real common<br />

nouns, that is, nouns designating classes <strong>of</strong> things that<br />

can be counted. But when ,so used the article does not<br />

designate one <strong>of</strong> the class as opposed to<br />

a certain other<br />

number, but as opposed to all the other members <strong>of</strong><br />

the same class. However, this article is sometimes used<br />

with abstract nouns: en uendelig kjcerlighet. In such<br />

cases that which is designated by the noun becomes individualized.<br />

The same principle holdes good in the<br />

case <strong>of</strong> the indefinite article used with names <strong>of</strong> substances.<br />

use <strong>of</strong> the indefinite article differs from English<br />

chiefly in the following: The article is not used with<br />

unmodified predicate nouns (i) that denote position or<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession : Han<br />

er larer, Han er prest, Han er farmer;<br />

(2) that denote religion: Han er lutheraner; (3) that<br />
