LESSON VIII.<br />

STRONG AND WEAK.<br />

25. Verbal stem. The verbal stem is the infinitive<br />

minus the final unaccented e: less from at Icese; s^riv<br />

from at strive. In verbs which do not have this -e, the<br />

stem and the infinitive are alike: bo from at bo (to<br />

dwell) ;<br />

se from at se (to see).<br />

26. Conjugations. There are two conjugations,<br />

the strong and the Tvea^.<br />

1. The strong conjugation forms its imperfect tense<br />

by a change <strong>of</strong> the root vowel: skrive skrcv; vsere<br />

var; synge<br />

sang.<br />

2. The weak conjugation forms its imperfect tense<br />

by adding endings<br />

to the verbal stem.<br />

For convenience, the verbs <strong>of</strong> this conjugation are classed<br />

as follows:<br />

Class I adds et for imp. tense, and et for perf.<br />

participle: at elske elsket elsket.<br />

Class II adds te for imp. tense, and t for perf.<br />

participle: at laese laeste laest.<br />

Class III adds dde for imp. tense, and dd for perf.<br />

participle: at bo bodde bodd.<br />

In vocabularies, weak verbs will be designated by these<br />

class numbers; strong and irregular verbs will have imp.<br />

tense and perf. part, given in full.<br />

27. The present tense is formed by adding<br />
