27. The possessive case is used to express several<br />

relations for which the preposition <strong>of</strong><br />

is or may be used<br />

in English:<br />

a. Logical subject for the action implied in the<br />

modified word: en larers arbeide, a teacher's work, the<br />

work <strong>of</strong> a teacher (i. e., the work a teacher does).<br />

b. Logical object for the action implied in the<br />

modified word: Amerikas opdagelse, the discovery <strong>of</strong><br />

America. This relation may also be expressed by av:<br />

opdagelsen av Amerika; but possession can not be expressed<br />

by av:<br />

c. The relation <strong>of</strong> source or origin: vindens sus,<br />

the sighing <strong>of</strong> the wind; bplgernes brusen, the roar <strong>of</strong><br />

the waves.<br />

28. In many instances prepositional phrases take<br />

the place <strong>of</strong> possessives.<br />

a. Guttens bukk, bukken til gutten.<br />

b. Husets tak, taket paa huset.<br />

c. Bo kens blad, bladene i bo ken.<br />

d. Amerikas opdagelse, opdagelsen av Amerika.<br />

RELATIVE PRONOUNS.<br />

29. The relative pronouns are som, der, hvem, hvilken,<br />

and hvad. The possessive is hvis.<br />

a. Som is the relative generally used. When<br />

governed by a preposition, the preposition comes last :<br />

Her er pennen som han skrev med. When used objec-<br />

han skrev<br />

tively, som may be omitted: Her er pennen<br />

med.<br />

b. Der is used as subject only. This relative is<br />

quite common in literature, but seldom used in spoken<br />

language. Der is used instead <strong>of</strong> the relative som<br />

when the adverbial conjunction som occurs in the same
