Vorwort
Preface
Ladies and gentlemen,
dear Opera Ball goers!
The Vienna Opera Ball is world-famous. The opera house on the Ring takes great care to prepare
for this great event during a planning period which lasted for several months. The whole opera
house is transformed during the three days preceding the ball: In the auditorium, the seats are
removed and replaced by a ballroom floor; tiers of boxes are installed on the stage; in the intermission
rooms, numerous tables are provided for the ball goers; and several bars and cafés, a
typical Austrian wine bar as well as a discotheque are set up. In the night before the ball the opera
house is decorated with thousands of flowers.
The debutantes have been rehearsing the opening choreography for many weeks. On the evening
of the ball itself they will stand in perfect lines at both sides of the dance floor to watch the
opening performances: First the ballet students, the corps de ballet and the first soloists will
dance. Then the orchestra of the Wiener Staatsoper, conducted by the General Music Director
Franz Welser-Möst, will perform the ouverture of Mozart’s The Clemency of Titus and accompany
two outstanding soloists from the ensemble of the Wiener Staatsoper – Valentina Naforniţă and
Adam Plachetka.
Finally, the debutantes will present their choreography which is traditionally followed by the first
waltz. This is the point at which the solo singers of the Wiener Staatsoper invite the ball goers to
join them on the dance floor with the words “Alles Walzer!”.
As in previous years, the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ORF will do a live broadcast of the
ball night which has always attracted one of the highest viewing figures in the last few years.
On behalf of all employees of the Wiener Staatsoper I should like to wish all ball goers a memorable
ball night!
VANESSA SANNINO
Vanessa Sannino was born in Milan in 1980. Being fascinated by the art of painting from an early
age, she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan where she studied stage-set design and
costume design. Since then she has been working i. a. at the Teatro alla Scala and the Comédie
Française where she was awarded the Prix Molière for her work. For the Wiener Staatsoper she
designed the costumes for the production of Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. The idea
for this year’s Opera Ball poster is based on one of the designs used for this production. At present
Vanessa Sannino studies painting in Turin. She will design the costumes for Marouf to be
performed at the Opéra Comique in Paris in May.
CARL MICHAEL ZIEHRER
Hofball-Musikdirektors“ verliehen.
Around 1900 at Viennese balls the polonaise was either danced or walked as an “intrada in a slow
festive three-four time”. At this time the repertoire of the Eduard Strauss Orchestra consisted of
five polonaises, one each by Strauss, Chopin, Kocipinski, Meyerbeer and Glinka. Eduard Strauss
was Ziehrer’s predecessor as music director of the Imperial and Royal Court Ball. The date of the
first performance of Ziehrer’s classical ball composition cannot be determined. However, the
following announcement from March 1906 gives evidence of some performances: “Published
at Doblinger’s – Fächer Polonaise (Fan Polonaise) – performed from the manuscript at many
balls with great success”. Ziehrer could probably provide his own polonaise composition which
he either did not give a title at all or he gave a title appropriate to the occasion, e.g., “Doctors’
Polonaise” for a physicians’ ball or “Concordia Polonaise” for the ball of the Journalists’ and Writers ’
Association. On 20 December 1908, Ziehrer was awarded the title of “Imperial and Royal Court
Ball Music Director”.
JOHANN STRAUSS SOHN/SON, ARAM CHATSCHATURJAN, JOHANN STRAUSS SOHN/SON (2×)
The ballet performance of the opening ceremony will begin with the Annen-Polka op. 117 by Johann
Strauss son which was performed for the first time at the “Annenfest” in Vienna’s public park,
Wiener Prater, in 1852. It will be performed by six couples of the Vienna State Opera Ballet School.
The Wiener Staatsballett will dance to the waltz which was composed by Aram Khatchaturian in
1941 for a Moscow production of Mikhail Lermontov’s drama The Masquerade written in 1835.
The dance will be performed by Maria Yakovleva and Kirill Kourlaev as well as twelve other couples.
After this waltz Olga Esina and Vladimir Shishov will conjure up a fantasy. This is by no means an
optical illusion, but the phenomenon of a “Fata Morgana” will be created by two real dancers. The
musical basis is opus 330, the Polka Mazurka Fata morgana composed by Johann Strauss in 1869.
The last dance will be Polka op. 301 with the ingenious title “Kreuzfidel” (“Very cheerful”) composed
by Johann Strauss son in 1865 for a guest performance of this orchestra in Pavlovsk near
St. Petersburg. It will be performed by the three solo couples – Nina Poláková and Roman Lazik,
Liudmila Konovalova and Eno Peci, Irina Tsymbal and Denys Cherervychko – and the corps de ballet.
OUVERTÜRE zu LA CLEMENZA DI TITO,
OUVERTURE from THE CLEMENCY OF TITUS,
WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts Oper La clemenza di Tito entstand in seinem letzten Lebensjahr –
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote the opera The Clemency of Titus in the last year of his life – in
1791 – on the occasion of Emperor Leopold II being crowned King of Bohemia. This piece, written
within a very short period of time, which is based on a then very popular theme is a story
about betrayed friendship and blind love as well as complex power struggles surrounding the
Roman Emperor Titus. Titus finally brings himself to pardon his would-be assassins in an act of
humanity and generosity.
QUANDO M'EN VO' aus/from LA BOHèME
GIACOMO PUCCINI
The bitter-sweet love story of the critically ill seamstress Mimì and the poet Rodolfo which is the
theme of Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème is one of the most famous subjects in the history of opera.
In addition to the “first” couple, so to speak, there is second couple: Musetta and Marcello. In
the famous waltz sung tonight the coquettish Musetta celebrates in a song her seductive beauty,
thus offending her older companion Alcindoro and flirting with her actual lover Marcello – all at
the same time.
Musical Program
FIN CH'HAN DAL VINO aus/from DON GIOVANNI
WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
1787 wurde Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts Don Giovanni im Ständetheater in Prag uraufgeführt, vom
Komponisten selbst geleitet.
In 1787, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Don Giovanni had its première at the Ständetheater in Prague,
directed by the composer himself. The aria Don Giovanni’s Fin ch’han dal vino sung tonight is
often called the “Champagne aria” in German – which actually is a mistranslation, but the name
has been kept because it has been used for such a long time. This is not about champagne at all,
but about an invitation to a celebration which the protagonist conveys in order to get on closer
terms with Zerlina whom he courts.
LIPPEN SCHWEIGEN aus/from DIE LUSTIGE WITWE
Lehár’s operetta Die lustige Witwe which was premièred in Vienna in 1905 induced a downright
“widow-mania” across Europe: Every theatre wanted to perform this successful operetta, even
the ladies’ fashion of the day was influenced by the costumes worn at the first performance.
Die lustige Witwe still is one of the most famous operettas. “Lippen schweigen” – Danilo and
Hanna’s love song – is one of the particularly popular pieces of this famous work.
SO äNGSTLICH SIND WIR NICHT. Schnell-Polka, op. 413
JOHANN STRAUSS (SOHN/SON)
He is remembered as “The Waltz King“: Johann Strauss son, born in 1825 in Vienna who was at
the very centre of the famous Strauss dynasty which did not only have a decisive influence on
the Vienna music scene, but arouses enthusiasm all over the world to this very day. In addition
to his music theatre works – Die Fledermaus, for example, is performed at the Wiener Staatsoper
every year at New Year’s Eve – he composed a large number of dance music pieces. These
were not only waltzes, galopps and quadrilles, but also many polkas such as the Schnell-Polka
“So ängstlich sind wir nicht” which will be played tonight.
AN DER SCHÖNEN BLAUEN DONAU, op. 314
ON THE BEAUTIFUL BLUE DANUBE, op. 314
JOHANN STRAUSS (SOHN/SON)
What more consenting confirmation could there be for “Alles Walzer!” (Everybody waltz!) than
the most famous Viennese waltz? On the Beautiful Blue Danube, op. 314 by Johann Strauss was
performed for the first time on 15 February 1867 in a chorus version which was not successful
enough to keep being performed. The orchestral version on the other hand was performed for
the first time a month later, on March 10, at the Imperial and Royal “Volksgarten” and has almost
become a secret anthem. Thus, in the year 2013 the Blue Danube Waltz will not only have opened
the year, but will also open the Vienna Opera Ball.
FLEDERMAUS-QUADRILLE, op. 363
BAT QUADRILLE, op. 363
JOHANN STRAUSS (SOHN/SON)
Johann Strauss’ Fledermaus probably is the best-known and most popular operetta which made
its journey from Vienna around the world. This work which was premièred in 1874, conducted
by the composer himself, was a tremendous success from the very start. It was first performed at
the Staatsoper in 1894 and has been part of the repertory with few exceptions ever since. It has
been performed at New Year’s Eve almost every year since 1900. The Bat Quadrille – composed
by Strauss himself – includes motifs of this popular work and is traditionally played as a musical
interlude at midnight.
ORPHEUS-QUADRILLE, op. 236
JOHANN STRAUSS (SOHN/SON)
Music theatre works from Paris, in particular, had been very popular in Vienna for a long time – and
it was the French operettas by Offenbach which, amongst other things, initiated the development
of the Vienna operetta. The Orpheus-Quadrille by Johann Strauss which will be played tonight
is based on Offenbach’s Orpheus in der Unterwelt, which was a great success when it was performed
at the Carltheater in Vienna. One has to say that using popular musical themes of foreign
composers in a quadrille had been a common method to perform highlights from popular works
again – if slightly changed – in those days.
DER PRINZ UND DIE KAISERIN
THE PRINCE AND THE EMPRESS
Swarovski, a prince, and memories of an empress are adding sparkle to a grand ball tradition.
Jewelry designer Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, who first demonstrated his flair for creating fabulous
diadems in 2012, is responsible for the design of this year’s tiaras. His latest piece was inspired
by Austrian high nobility: “I have always loved Winterhalter’s portrait of Empress Elisabeth with
diamond stars in her hair. I went one step further in the design for my latest piece. My thought
was that if Sisi were around today, the stars she would dream of would probably be blue.” Sparkling
blue crystals will therefore reflect the light of what is probably the most beautiful ballroom
in the world, proving once more that Swarovski crystal is just as important a part of the Vienna
Opera Ball as the waltz.
SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. Das diesjährige Design trägt den Namen „Sisi’s Blue Dreams“.
Swarovski develops the glistening tiaras with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS for the debutantes at the
Vienna Opera Ball. This year’s design is called “Sisi’s Blue Dreams.”
“La vie est belle”, meaning “Life is beautiful.” It is the fragrance of joy, of smiles and of freedom
which is also the spirit LANCÔME wants the debutantes to capture and spread all over the world.
The foundation Teint Miracle captures the skin’s natural light creating a fl awless and fresh aura.
For a soft highlighting glow LANCÔME chose its Blush Subtil “Rose Sable” 02. The two soft, subtle
by the black Crayon Khôl Noir 01 and the new Hypnôse Star Mascara. L’Absolu Rouge 06 coats
WIENER STAATSOPERNORCHESTER
The renown of the Wiener Staatsoper is due not least to its orchestra, the Wiener Staatsopernorchester.
This orchestra is largely – but not entirely – identical to the Vienna Philharmonic. The
Wiener Staatsopernorchester plays almost every evening at the opera house on the Ring, at both
opera and ballet performances. Strict selection criteria apply for acceptance to the orchestra.
Considerable importance is attached not least to preserving the so-called “Viennese sound”, which
is known for its particular sparkle and warmth and which is unique around the world.
WIENER STAATSBALLETT
In
The following premières have been scheduled for the current season: Tanzperspektiven (20 February)
and Nurejew Gala 2013 (29 June) at the Wiener Staatsoper, and A Midsummer Night’s
LADO
It was by stroke of luck that the Italian-born singer Lado happened to meet Heinz Schimanko
in Velden at the Wörthersee. He was offered two-month engagement and two decades later he
is still here – the former globetrotter has become a true Viennese. He toured Europe when he
was only 15 years old, performing also in Africa, Japan and the USA. The master of the Italian and
French genre spent six years in Monte Carlo where he performed at the Casino of the Hotel de
Paris and at the Sporting Club. This year Lado makes his debut as a singer at the Vienna Opera
Ball where he will entertain the guests at the Café Oper Wien.
DJ MR. GUAN (THE LOUD MINORITY)
„The Loud Minority“.
“The Loud Minority” collective named after a Frank Foster record from 1974 has been an integral
part of the Vienna hip hop, soul & rare groove scene for the last ten years. It doesn’t matter
whether they organise a party, a gig or an exclusive presentation of a 7-inch record: the team
always follows its style and delivers high quality. Mr. Guan is one of the two founding fathers of
“The Loud Minority”. He discovered his love for vinyl, the “black gold”, at the age of twelve and
has been collecting records ever since. Now as he is in his mid-thirties, his varied DJ sets are
probably amongst of the best in town. At the opera ball, his guests may look forward to a mix of
hip hop, disco and house.
OPERNBALLDISCO
In terms of music and appearance the disco will take you back to the 1970s. Funk in the style
is put together by the Viennese creative events and music agency BJK Music & Concepts
in cooperation with the Vienna radio station 98.3 Superfly. Disco, 70s, house – Fritz da Groove
times – he has been part of the Vienna club scene for the past 25 years. At the opera ball he will
get you moving under a “sea of disco balls”, even if your legs are tired from too much waltzing.
Fritz will bring soul to the ball and the guests to the dance floor.
