musikFabrik. Both of those ensembles are presenting programmes that swell their
numbers to chamber orchestral and larger dimensions. That’s a general indication
of the orchestral and ensemble programmes of this year’s edition of musikfest
berlin: musical bodies growing as well as downsizing into groups or solo formations.
The model for this programming conception once again is Boulez’s epochmaking
masterpiece of the 20th century, Pli selon pli, which encompasses within
a single work the whole range of possibilities for expanding and contracting an
ensemble, “fold by fold”.
On the eve of the festival, the Keller Quartet will devote their entire concert to a
complete performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Art of Fugue, that solitary
“Livre” of freely unfolding polyphony in which the 26-year-old composer Pierre
Boulez discerned a paradigm of organized musical delirium, of creative frenzy, in
his 1951 essay Moment de Jean-Sébastien Bach (“A Time for Johann Sebastian
Bach”).
