Background: In symptomatic patients performing an early primary
repair of tetralogy of Fallot(TOF) or TOF with pulmonary atresia, irrespective
of age, or placing a palliative shunt remains still controversial,
despite the predominate opinion in the literature with a clear preference
of early repair, as shunt related mortality and morbidity can not be neglected.
The aim of the study was to analyze the strict policy of primary
early correction.
Methods: No shunt procedure was performed for early repair of TOF under
the age of 6 month (n=100pts.) since 5/2005, regardless of pulmonary
artery size, however, all patients have antegrade pulmonary blood flow.
and/or PDA. The median age at surgery was 3.0 months. 25 pts (25%)
were newborns. Two groups were analyzed: I. pts < 1 month; II. pts 2 - 6
months of age.
Results: There was no early and one late death during the 6 years of follow
up. There was no difference in bypass time or hospital stay between
the two groups, but Aristotle comprehensive score(p
